Rondebosch out to stop Wynberg’s shot at a Southern Suburbs Slam

Wynberg Boys’ High fullback Laeeq Davids scored a hat-trick in a recent 64-12 dismantling of their southern suburbs rivals Bishops.

On Saturday, they’ll have their eyes set on a big prize, a Southern Suburbs Slam: a clean sweep of their southern suburbs rivals – Rondebosch Boys’ High, SACS, and Bishops.

On Saturday, Rondebosch hosts ‘Berg in a 12:15 clash on the Tinkie Heyns Field. They lost the first bout 17-27 in April, largely due to Wynberg’s dangerous rolling maul.

Hooker Naeem Mohammed scored a brace off the back of the maul in the win over Bishops. He’ll be tough to stop, while his fellow front-ranker, prop Boitumelo Mabohlo, is a dangerman in the scrums.

The visitors’ exciting flyhalf Achmat Behardien is away on South Africa u18 duty, with inside centre Luke Gertze moving into the no. 10 jersey. He’s a capable replacement and will aim to get the backline flowing, while Davids, at the back, will have his sights set on providing finishes.

Rondebosch appears to be a slight underdog at home. However, they have plenty of flair and the potential to cause an upset.

Their versatile fullback, Caleb Bell, is one of the most agile players in schoolboy rugby. Between them, he, outside centre Jayden Wyngaard, and left-wing Ephraim Mangunga dotted down four times in a 36-30 win over SACS at the beginning of August.

The biggest question Rondebosch will be asked will be posed by Wynberg’s rolling maul. Lock Sebastian Vermeulen and prop Finn Watermeyer are powerful players with the potential to nullify that threat. It could be the deciding factor in the contest.

Hoërskool Hugenote (Wellington) has been in fine form in 2026, winning 11 out of 14 matches. They’ve won their last three matches by scoring 39 points in each of them.

Hoërskool Swartland’s goal will be to end that trend and avenge last season’s narrow 25-26 defeat, which would extend their own winning streak to five games.

The teams kick off at 14:00 in Wellington on Saturday. With roughly 10 000 people expected at the game, it promises to be an exciting and evenly contested encounter.

Hooker Ravesh Padayachiey has been a consistent try-scorer for Hugenote, while their scrumhalf Lorenzo de Jager has an eye for an opportunity and has been on the scoresheet often in recent weeks.

Rockies‘ flyhalf De Wet van Aswegen will be vitally important in a tight match-up. He contributed 14 points from a try, a penalty, and three conversions in last week’s 24-14 triumph over Hoërskool Hopefield.

Hooker Winsor Solomons has been through a recent try-scoring drought, but Saturday would be the ideal time to break it. One of the key factors in the game will be whether or not either of the lock pairings can disrupt Solomons and Padayachiey at lineout time.

Flyhalf and captain Chadlin Sellidon has been the talisman for Milnerton High all season long. He and scrumhalf Callan Lakay were the last try-scorers in a narrow 20-22 loss to HTS Drostdy two weeks ago.

Lakay sets the tempo of the attack with his distribution, while Sellidon is the prime playmaker.

They host Hoërskool Melkbosstrand at 11:20 on Saturday. Melkies also came out on the wrong end of a result last weekend, losing 15-22 to Hoërskool Tygerberg.

Millies won 36-7 at Melkbostrand when they last met in 2024. However, the hosts have found victories hard to come by in 2026, winning twice and drawing once in 14 fixtures.

Melkies will feel they can produce a lot more than seven points on Saturday. Fullback Craig Solomons has been one of their standout try-scorers, while loose forwards Beuren Geduld and Leslie Smyth will test the home side’s defensive line with crash-ball carries.

The outcome is tough to call, with the sides appearing evenly matched.
