SACS aiming to do the double over Bishops

It’s been a tough run of southern suburbs derby matches for Bishops in 2026. They’ve yet to earn a victory. On Saturday, they’ll be hoping to reverse their fortune against SACS on the Piley Rees. Kickoff is at 12:30.

The visitors’ flyhalf, Jake Dave, is in terrific form. Largely thanks to his accuracy off the kicking tee, he’s bagged 39 points in his last two matches.

SACS lost 30-36 to Rondebosch Boys’ High in their last outing, but defeated Bishops 22-17 when they met back in April.

Examining the bigger picture, Bishops has enjoyed the better of the last 10 meetings between the schools, winning five times, drawing twice, and losing thrice.

Eighthman Jack Venter was the last Bishops forward to score a try and is out for Saturday. Captain and usual inside centre, Boytjie Fyfer, will be moved to blindside flank as a result. Jono Horton will play eighthman.

Fullback Eljaron Geduld returns from injury and will aim to find some chemistry with flyhalf Caleb Clark. The talented pair is capable of being a creative and dangerous counterattacking combo.

The SACS pack is not to be underestimated. They’ve largely held their own in the scrums against big-name opposition, including Paarl Boys’ High and Paul Roos Gimnasium. Props Qiraan Hermans and Deen Fortuin will aim to impose themselves in the set scrums, and Bishops will need to be up for that challenge.

After five consecutive losses at the start of the season, Hoërskool Bellville has made huge progress, winning seven of nine games since. They’ll hope to end their campaign with three wins in succession when they tackle DF Akademie at 13:45 on Saturday.

As hosts last year, Bellville won 15-3, and they will feel confident that they have the goods to win away on this occasion.

While DF enjoyed a big 44-17 win over HTS Bellville last week, their season, as a whole, has produced mixed results.

Bellville has some key players to lean on in their quest to end their campaign favourably. Captain and hooker Meyer Brits has been a standout among his peers in the pack all season long and has regularly scored tries. He’s a good lineout thrower, and he also packs a big punch as a ball carrier and tackler.

Flanks Zandro Stramrood and Liam Genis have been strong fetchers for the visitors. They’ll try to cut off the DF’s momentum with jackal attempts at the breakdown. In a boost to their line-up, lock Steven Steyl returns from injury for Bellville.

Given their strong run of form going into the business end of the season, Bellville have the odds stacked in their favour in their last outing of the season.

Hoërskool Charlie Hofmeyr has also been in good form in 2026. They’ve won 10 of their 11 matches, and will aim to extend their three-game winning streak against Hoërskool Montagu. Charlies are at home, and the kickoff is at 13:30.

The Ceres locals clinched a 20-19 victory against Montagu last year. They will feel more confident as hosts this time, and also because they have produced a more successful campaign than in 2025.

With an attack that draws inspiration from fullback Shandley Burrows, Charlies have averaged a healthy 32 points per match. Not only is Burrows influential with the ball in hand, but from the kicking tee as well. In a tight 20-18 win over Hermanus a fortnight ago, he kicked two penalties and two conversions.

Tight forwards Lourens Nel and Dewald Jaars have been strong in the scrums, and both have been regular try scorers, too, with Nel also a threat off the back of the rolling maul. Jaars has been selected at lock this week, but could pack down at prop if needed.

Charlie Hofmeyr will be favoured at home.
