SACS does the double over Bishops, Charlie Hofmeyr wins last home game against Montagu

On Saturday, South African College High School’s (SACS) key players all showed up to the party as they outplayed Bishops 55-22 on the Piley Rees Field to secure a season’s double over their southern suburbs rivals.

SACS hooker and captain Zac Dall, outside centre Luca Orgill, and left-wing Luke McKenzie all sparkled and crossed for two tries each.

Flyhalf Jake Dave’s five conversions lifted him to 49 points from his last three games.

Bishops lost 17-22 to SACS on the Memorial-A Field in April, and will feel frustrated that they didn’t put up a stronger fight at home.

Hooker Joe Lanning and prop Jack Hibling looked good for the hosts up front, and both were try scorers. However, they required more from their fellow forwards, who struggled against a well-structured SACS attack.

With a cohesive pack of forwards in the driving maul and backs who move the ball out wide quickly, SACS will aim to finish the season with a morale-boosting win at home against Wynberg Boys’ High next Saturday.

On the same afternoon, Bishops heads to Rondebosch Boys’ High, where they will be the underdog against their arch-rival.

Hoërskool Bellville ended their season with three consecutive triumphs after a slim 21-18 win at DF Akademie on Saturday.

Left-wing Liam Kuyk was the lone try scorer among the Bellville backs, while forwards Cade Mong and Corné Smit tallied a try each and were key performers for Bellville, both on attack and defence. If not for some crucial work from the duo at the breakdowns, DF might have claimed victory.

It was fitting to see eighthman Gerhard Groenewald and prop Cor Hoving score tries for the hosts. Throughout the season, both were workhorses who caught the eye by making try-saving tackles and try-making line breaks.

DF endured a season of mixed fortunes, and losing the Bellville derby surely hurts. However, they showed improvement during their campaign, with the second half of their season being much better than the first half.

They picked up three wins and a draw in their last seven games, while their first nine games resulted in only two wins.

The Kwaggas completed their schedule with three wins on the trot. After beginning their season with five successive defeats, they bounced back to win eight of their last 10 matches.

Just two years after compiling an unbeaten season, with Luan Gilliomee at flyhalf, Hoërskool Charlie Hofmeyr has very nearly matched that record. With one match still to play next Saturday, they have lost only one game, 17-19 to Hoërskool Bredasdorp, while their 41-27 victory over Hoërskool Montagu on Saturday was their eleventh of 2026.

The Ceres locals have a strong attacking philosophy, and used it to full effect. Eighthman Joshua Selders and utility forward Jacque du Plessis went over for tries, while their other four tries were scored by their speedsters, right-wing Zephenith Sass, outside centre Chris-Will du Toit, flyhalf Randall Muller, and scrumhalf Ashley Reitz.

Charlie Hofmeyr visits Robertson next Saturday. They’ll head into the contest confident they have what it takes to score a twelfth win of the season.
