Davids hat-trick spurs Wynberg to derby win, Drostdy wins first meeting with Milnerton

Fullback Laaeq Davids has been an elusive runner all season, and crossed for a superb hat-trick for Wynberg Boys’ High in their emphatic 64-12 southern suburbs derby victory over Bishops on Saturday.

With the win, Wynberg made it a season’s double, having beaten Bishops 38-20 in May.

It was a back-and-forth first half on Hawthornden Field, with the score just 19-12 in favour of the hosts at the break.

Bishops’ eighthman Jack Venter and right-wing Lulibo Nyawula breached the Wynberg defence and scored tries, while flyhalf Caleb Clark knocked over a conversion.

In the second half, Wynberg ran riot to put 52 points between themselves and the visitors. Right-wing Zachary de Kock dotted down twice as the hosts found success out wide. Hooker Naeem Mohammed was as consistent as ever, adding a brace off the back of Wynberg’s ever-so-reliable rolling maul.

Bishops will return home to assess the damage and prepare for their penultimate fixture against SACS next Saturday. On the same day, target a season’s double over Rondebosch Boys’ High.

As expected, openside flank Zandro Stramrood impacted the contest with his brutish physicality, scoring a crucial try in Hoërskool Bellville’s tight 20-17 win over Hoërskool Strand on Saturday.

Last year, the Kwaggas lost the contest 7-29, so the narrow victory served as sweet revenge for the visitors.

Strand captain and eighthman Rohan Bezuidenhout, and centres Preston Lee Tobias and Waldo Newton, scored tries for Bellville in an enthusiastic display from the hosts. Flyhalf Leathan Lewis tacked on two points with his boot.

There was little to separate the sides, and the game could have gone either way. In addition to scoring a try, Kwaggas’ fullback Devanté Vlotman also slotted a penalty.

Strand will hope to return to winning ways when they visit Hoërskool Hermanus next Saturday. In their last match of the season, Bellville will aim for three wins on the trot when they travel to DF Akademie on the same day.

In a historic first clash between the schools, HTS Drostdy defeated Milnerton High 22-20 in Worcester.

The Donkies, so often recognised for their attacking prowess, showed how stubborn they could be on defence. Despite Millies applying heavy pressure, the hosts always found a way to claw their way back into the game.

Millies should be proud of the challenge they put up. Captain and flyhalf, Chadlin Sellidon, led with his stoic performance, contributing a try, a conversion, and two penalties. Scrumhalf Callan Lakay scored the visitors’ other try, while outside centre Kyle Lodewyk added a conversion.

Drostdy will need to up their performance level when they host Hoërskool Outeniqua in their last match of the season on 15 August.
