Hoërskool Swartland flyhalf De Wet van Aswegen tallied 14 points – scoring a try, kicking a penalty, and three conversions – to help steer his side to a 24-14 victory at Hoërskool Hopefield on Thursday afternoon.
It was Swartland’s second successive win over Hopefield. They won 31-20 in 2025.
The Roccies displayed a high level of physicality in defence to limit the opposition to 14 points. Tighthead prop Ernst Coetzee troubled the hosts with his powerful carries and again got himself on the scoresheet.
The reliable utility back Christiaan Mocke scored Swartland’s other try.
Hopefield won’t be happy that they ended their season with a loss. However, they produced a solid campaign, winning five of their eight fixtures.
On the flip side, Swartland is in good form heading into their big battle against Hoërskool Hugenote (Wellington). Up to 10 000 people will walk through the Wellington school’s gates next Saturday.
Hoërskool Tygerberg ended their six-game losing streak, bagging their third win of the season with a 22-15 victory over Hoërskool Melkbosstrand.
With only Hottentots Holland High and Hoërskool Brackenfell left on their schedule, the Tigers will believe they can ride the momentum they created by winning on Thursday and finish the season with a couple more victories over the next two Saturdays.
Credit must also go to Melkies. They put up a good fight in Parow. Hooker Darius Prinsloo and scrumhalf Cole Japhta played well and tallied a try each.
Melkbosstrand will feel frustrated after going down for a third successive loss. They’ll have an opportunity to reverse their fortunes when they visit Milnerton High next weekend.
Left-wing Matthew Arendse scored two crucial tries for Hoërskool Hugenote (Wellington) in their 39-29 defeat of Hoërskool Brackenfell on Wednesday afternoon.
With the triumph, they not only ended Brakkies’ three-match winning streak but also doubled their own from one to two games in succession.
Outside centre Hassani Daniëls dotted down for the first time in a while, while loosehead prop Etienne de Bruyn also enjoyed bagging a five-pointer, which he deserved after a hard shift in the scrums.
To no one’s surprise, the elusive scrumhalf Lorenzo de Jager and explosive hooker Ravesh Padayachiey were again on the scoresheet.
Hugenote is also playing good rugby heading into next Saturday’s exciting showdown against Swartland. Meanwhile, Brakkies will focus on returning to winning ways at home against HTS Bellville on the same day.
