Maritzburg College welcomes Glenwood to Goldstone’s on Saturday for a derby that was first played in 1921. Glenwood won that first clash 5-0 at home, but College will expect to win at home this weekend.

A glance through the College line-up reveals only one change from the team that beat Pretoria Boys High 33-13 last weekend, but it is an important change. SA Schools and SA u18 hooker, Theo Boshoff, is on national duty in the u18 International Series. His replacement is Danie Matthee.
Boshoff, unsurprisingly, has been an ever-present this season, so it’s an opportunity for Matthee to pull on the famous white-badged jersey and show what he’s about, supported by a settled, strong team.
It’s worth noting, too, that SA Schools’ centre, Olwethu Kosani, is also missing from the College ranks. He has been sidelined for a while now by an injury.
College, though, has established a strong identity this season. They’re hard-hitting, both on the attack and defence, and their loose trio – captain Rory Stanton, Caleb Sweetnam, and David Colenbrander – is a force to be reckoned with when contesting ball on the ground, and attacking and defending around the fringes of rucks.
That’s an area in which Theo Boshoff has excelled, so Danie Matthee will have a chance to feed off the Red, Black, and White‘s loose forwards and make his own mark.
College has played some exciting counterattacking rugby this season, and they are especially dangerous when they get the ball to their wings, stretching the opposition defence. Glenwood will need to slow down College’s ball from the rucks. If they allow College to build up momentum, it will be a long day for the Green Machine.
Last weekend, they visited Johannesburg and came away with a 43-36 win over Parktown Boys’ High, which was a welcome salve after being outplayed by Northwood on Dixon’s Field the previous weekend.
A positional move immediately captures the attention when viewing the Glenwood team. They’ve moved one of their key playmakers, Vincenzo Loutz, from scrumhalf to flyhalf. Perhaps, he will have more space there to implement his skills. He’s a good goal kicker, and he will need to be because College’s Dom du Toit is one of the best.
It is, in some ways, a pity that Boshoff is not in the College line-up because his opposite number, Glenwood hooker Tyler Leon, who is only 16 years of age, reminds one of Boshoff in many ways. He, too, is a force in the loose, and he’s also a powerful breakaway threat.
The biggest challenge facing the visitors on Saturday will be winning quality ball against a voraciously hungry College pack that hunts well together.
Glenwood captain Bonga Chibane will pack down against College tighthead Alande Ngubane. While they both have a primary job to perform in the front row, they’re also try-scoring threats from close range, and both have scored their fair share in 2026. Watch out for big boys!
King Edward VII vs Durban High School
In Johannesburg, Durban High School (DHS) tackles King Edward VII (KES).

The visitors will be without four key performers, with Bulelani Cebani, Amo Mataboge, Priden Sibiya, and Nathan Aneke – two forwards and two backs – all in action in the U18 International Series for the SA u18A side.
In a massive boost, though, the Horseflies welcome back their inspirational captain, flank Zion Smith, who was selected for the Sharks but missed the Craven Week with an injury.
While DHS being without four of their frontline players will help the Red Army‘s ambitions, DHS’s rugby teams have enjoyed an outstanding season, exhibiting enviable depth. In recent weeks, their 1st XV drew with KES’s arch-rival Jeppe, but the other 17 teams won. They won all 13 matches against Northwood last weekend. Given the quality of the missing players, there will be a drop-off, but not too much.
The biggest challenge facing the visitors is getting their combinations to click. They’ll also be focused on playing a complete game. While they have played some good rugby this season, they have also too often gone off the boil during games, which has cost them dearly.
KES has a similar challenge to address. However, their focus will be on their start. Last week, against Jeppe, they started slowly, leading to Jeppe charging to a big 36-12 lead at halftime.
The home side will aim to produce more of what followed in the second half, which included scoring four tries without reply to draw to within 31-36. Ultimately, Jeppe triumphed 46-31, but there was enough in the Red Army’s performance to show that the outcome could have been better had they started better.
While they lost, it was a game to remember for centre Sam Smith, who powered over for four tries. With Nathan Aneke not partnering Sterling Padi in the DHS midfield, KES might try their luck there. But Byron Klaasin and Padi are not strangers, and have played at centre together this season.
KES coach Jabz Zulu knows just how tough the challenge is that awaits his charges. The former 1st XV coach of Westville Boys’ High was a first-hand witness to the monotonous excellence built by Peter Engeldow and Ronnie Uys at DHS.
DHS’s long drive from the KZN coast, high altitude, and a passionate home crowd, though, will all be to the Red Army’s advantage.
