The schoolboy football season kicked into gear on the weekend, with some teams starting their programmes in the third term, while others already have plenty of matches under their belt. Action took place in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, KZN, and Gauteng.
In the Eastern Cape, the St Andrew’s College football team was boosted by the arrival of their official playing kit, which was made more memorable by a special visit from former Bafana Bafana defender Robyn Johannes, who shared his journey, experiences, and valuable insights with the squad.
During the holiday, St Andrew’s took on Sophia Stars, a prominent local football club in Makhanda that has previously achieved notable successes, including winning the 2024 Eastern Cape Engen Knockout Challenge.
In a tough outing, St Andrew’s needed to stage a comeback after falling 0-1 behind. But they came away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory. A week later, they ran out 2-0 winners over Joza All Stars.
On Saturday, St Andrew’s College continued their winning ways, edging out Victoria Park High 5-4 in a penalty shootout after regulation time ended without a goal being scored.
In the Western Cape, Wynberg Boys’ High and Paul Roos Gimnasium reignited their rivalry. They shared seven goals on Friday, with Wynberg winning 4-3. Wynberg’s 2nd XI also won, securing a 2-0 victory the following day.
In KZN, Kearsney College and Hilton College played to a 1-1 draw.
Hilton initially controlled the match, which was characterised by relentless intensity. Kearsney, though, demonstrated strong character and resilience to claw their way back into the game.
Goalkeeper Qabu Mngoma was instrumental in keeping Kearsney competitive, pulling off some fine saves. His quick reflexes and calmness under pressure prevented Hilton from adding to their one goal.
Kearsney’s 15-year-old Jordan Summerford also delivered an impressive performance, appearing completely at ease despite making his official first-team debut during the pre-season.
The young midfielder came agonisingly close to clinching victory for Kearsney, delivering a magnificent strike that was matched by an equally outstanding save from the Hilton goalkeeper.
In other matches in KZN, Westville Boys’ High secured a narrow 3-2 victory at Michaelhouse, while Northwood scored a 2-0 win over Clifton College.
Jeppe High School for Boys, after an unbeaten run at the Association of Public Boys’ Schools of South Africa (APBSA) Football Festival held at Pretoria Boys High, added another victory to the five they achieved in Pretoria, beating Durban High School (DHS) 3-1 in Durban.
St John’s College performed well against St Benedict’s College, with the 1st XI winning 3-0, and their teams picking up four wins from their six games across various age groups.
