Hoërskool Waterkloof, St Mary’s Waverley, Hoërskool Noordheuwel, and Helpmekaar Kollege punched their tickets to the semi-finals of the Pullen section of the Pullen and Howell Tournament on Tuesday evening in Johannesburg.
St Mary’s Waverley was the first side to secure their berth with a tightly contested 1-0 win over last year’s champion, Affies Meisies.
St Mary’s made a strong start and created a handful of opportunities that were rebuffed by the Affies defence. Their attacks soon yielded a result, though, from a short corner conversion five minutes into the contest. That goal was enough to secure victory.
They’ll host Noordheuwel in Thursday evening’s semi-finals.
Nories clinched a hard-earned 5-4 penalty shootout win over their arch-rivals Hoërskool Monument after they played to a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Only six minutes remained when Monnas broke the deadlock. Noordheuwel responded furiously, piling pressure on the visitors, and that won them a penalty stroke two minutes later, which they made count.
The shootout was as entertaining as the match. Both sides converted their first penalties and then missed their second ones. From there, they were on target stroke-for-stroke, which sent the contest into a sudden-death shootout.
Helpmekaar’s visit to St Andrew’s School for Girls also required penalties to determine a winner. Neither team scored in regulation time, but Helpies won through to the final four 3-2 in the shootout.
The contest needed a hero to help determine the result, and Helpmekaar’s goalkeeper put her hand up for the role, warding off two St Andrew’s attempts in brilliant fashion.
Their reward is a semi-final showdown against Waterkloof at 18:30 on Thursday.
Playing in the final match of the day, coach Omari Pienaar-Geyer‘s charges were disciplined and patient in a 4-0 win over Steyn City at St Mary’s.
Klofies showed their intent early in the first half, launching attack after attack on Steyn City’s goal, but they were rebuffed. That pressure, however, paid dividends in the second half.
Waterkloof netted with 12 minutes left on the clock, and that opened the floodgates, with the Pretoria girls striking again a minute later to stun Steyn City.
They kept their foot on the accelerator, adding a third four minutes from time and their fourth with just over a minute to go.
The final takes place on Saturday.
