After scoring two wins and with their closest rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns, tasting defeat, Kaizer Chiefs leapfrogged the Brazilians to take over at the top of the Gauteng Development League (GDL) standings after a busy weekend of intense action.
The Amakhosi played twice and delivered emphatic performances in both outings, outplaying Future of Africa 6-0 on Saturday, then followed that up with a 4-2 win over Joburg City on Sunday.
Sundowns, the reigning champions, faced Joburg City on Saturday and scraped a narrow 1-0 victory. Then, on Sunday, they stumbled, going down 1-2 to Pitso Mosimane Youth Football (PMYF).
Since taking over the GDL status of East Rand Athletic Club in April, PMYF has steadily climbed the table and become a tougher and more competitive team.
Further evidence of their competitiveness was provided the day before the Sundowns showdown, when they beat Prestige Development Football Academy 2-0. With back-to-back wins, they matched Kaizer Chiefs with a six-point haul from the weekend.
Randburg, third in the standings, produced an exceptional performance on Saturday, overrunning Wits Juniors 5-0. On Sunday, however, the goals dried up, and they shared a goalless stalemate with Siwelele, who had played to a 2-2 draw with their Pretoria counterparts, Rockefvs, the previous day. On Sunday, Africa School of Excellence handed Rockefvs a 4-2 defeat.
In other matches played on Saturday, Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA) and the University of Pretoria (Tuks) drew 1-1, Kathorus Hyper Academy secured a 2-0 victory over Jomo Cosmos, and Highlands Park scored a 1-0 win over Panorama.
On Sunday, RESA delivered an improved performance, defeating Seven’s Academy 4-1, while Wits Juniors, smarting from their big loss to Randburg, showed plenty of fight to hold Panorama to a 2-2 draw.
Kathorus Hyper Academy edged out Highlands Park 1-0, and Jomo Cosmos and Future of Africa shared a 1-1 draw.
