Pitso Mosimane Youth Football (PMYF), ever since taking over the East Rand Athletic Club‘s Gauteng Development League (GDL) status in April, has been shaking things up in the GDL and has now reached the top four of the standings.
Recently, they’ve gone head-to-head with the two leading title contenders and more than held their own.
On Sunday, 18 October, PMYF defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1, which cost the Brazilians their place atop the table. On Saturday, they held Kaizer Chiefs, the team that took over at the top from Sundowns, to a 1-1 draw. That led to another exchange of positions between the two front-runners.
Back in first place, with 68 points, the reigning champions, Sundowns, have three matches left to play, while Kaizer Chiefs, on 66 points, has only two.
In a Tshwane derby on Saturday, Sundowns suffered a setback, going down 0-1 to the University of Pretoria (Tuks). On Sunday, they rebounded with a 4-2 home victory over Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA), with Sbusiso Tolomane, Shaun Masete, Junior Maseou, and Kgaogelo Monanyane scoring for Bafana Ba Style.
On Saturday, two teams hovering just above the relegation zone, Highlands Park and Jomo Cosmos, crossed swords, with the Lions of the North winning 1-0 and picking up a valuable three points.
Panorama delivered a surprising 3-1 victory over Siwelele, while Kathorus Hyper Academy and Wits Junior played to a 1-1 draw. Then, on Sunday, Kathorus and Panorama drew 0-0.
While RESA lost to Mamelodi Sundowns, they also bagged three points for a 1-0 victory over Rockefvs on Saturday.
Randburg scored a 2-0 win over the Africa School of Excellence, Prestige Football Development Academy ran out 3-0 winners against Seven’s Academy, and Future of Africa secured a 2-0 win over Joburg City.
