Hoërskool Punt‘s captain, De Wet Heyneke, led from the front, capturing a magical 7/2 in less than four overs as Punt restricted the Rosemoor Hub to only 23/9 in a South Western Districts rain Schools SA20 match on Tuesday.
Thanks to Heyneke’s excellence, the match finished rather quickly, but the Hub picked up two wickets before Punt won in the third over of their reply.
Steven Heath took 1/9 in seven balls, and Zachary Opperman claimed 1/17 in an over, but it was a comfortable chase for the Mossel Bay school.
Luke Constance struck two fours and a six, racing to 14 not out off four deliveries to see Punt to 26/2 and an eight-wicket victory.
In a Western Province rain Schools SA20 match, Fairmont decided to bat first after winning the toss at Stellenberg High.
After limiting the visitors to only 72/9, Stellies were surely confident of victory, but Fairmont had other plans, pulling off a staggering three-run win.
Fairmont’s top six all fell for single-figure scores, leaving them floundering on 25/6 in the eighth over. However, their lower order fought back to add some substance to their innings. Zach Woolstenscroft top-scored with 14, while Jayden Niewenhuis and Cullen Symonds contributed 11 each.
Stellies’ John Naudé claimed 2/12 from four overs, Liam Saal garnered 2/12 in three overs, and Aidan Pienaar captured 2/1 in his two-over spell.
The home team appeared on course for a routine win when they worked their way to 24/1 in the sixth over. Much like Fairmont, however, their top order didn’t contribute much.
Captain Francis Hugo made 10, and that was the top score until Liam Saal, batting at six, chipped in with a laboured 16 from 39 balls.
After Saal, three of the next five batsmen were dismissed for ducks, and the game slipped away from Stellenberg, who were bowled out off the last ball of their 20 overs for 69.
Cayden Kolbe removed three top-order batsmen, returning a superb 3/7 from his four overs, while Gabriel van Zyl snared 2/6 from four. Fairmont’s opening bowlers, Zach Woolstencroft and Zeke Abrahams, claimed 2/15 and 2/16, respectively.
