BOKSBURG. – One of the early favourites in this year’s DStv Schools Challenge, Helpmekaar Kollege, put forward two solid performances during the opening day of this year’s national championship by defeating Chief Ampie (48-5) and Framesby (36-8).

The defending champions, Die Hoërskool Menlopark, might not be mentioned among the early favourites for this year’s event, but they started their tournament with an impressive 30-25 victory over Stellenberg.

The Parkies will without a doubt take some much-needed confidence from this victory.

Paarl Gimnasium, champions of the Absa Wildeklawer tournament, got their campaign off with a 53-5 over Sobaba. They will also be favourites to make the semi-finals.

The Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool of Pretoria bagged an emphatic 74-3 victory over Friersdale in their first match of the tournament. They are in the same group as Paarl Girls’ High and Voortrekker of Bethlehem.

Paarl Girls’ High defeated the Free State champions, the Trekkers, by 28-19. Affies’ clash on the second day against the team from Paarl will decide who has the easier route going into the playoffs.

In Group H, the top spot will be decided in the clash between Oranje of Bloemfontein and Hoërskool Rustenburg. The Rusties defeated De Kruine (57-10) and Tlotlissong (56-6) in their first two games in Boksburg.

Oranje secured two solid victories over Tholulwazi (40-4) and Hoërskool Nelspruit (30-14) so far.
