Kingswood hold firm to claim fifth consecutive K-Day netball victory

K-Day 2026 delivered another memorable chapter in the long-standing rivalry between Diocesan School for Girls of Makhanda  (DSG) and Kingswood College, with the latter overcoming challenging circumstances to secure a 33–26 victory in the headline Suzuki Netball Power Series fixture.

Persistent rain and difficult weather conditions disrupted the day’s schedule, resulting in several matches being cancelled. However, the eagerly anticipated 1st team encounter was relocated to the Kingswood High Performance Centre (HPC), ensuring the showcase match could still take place.

After waiting more than three hours for the match to begin, Kingswood displayed remarkable professionalism and maturity. The team used the delay effectively, balancing rest and recovery with a focused, high-intensity warm-up closer to the revised start time.

Kingswood began the contest with purpose and intensity, combining speed, skill, and disciplined execution to take control of the opening quarter. Their attacking unit moved the ball with confidence while the defence applied relentless pressure, helping the hosts establish an 11–3 lead at the first break.

DSG responded impressively in the second quarter. Increased defensive pressure and improved connections through the court allowed the visitors to gain momentum and win the quarter 9–5. Despite the fightback, Kingswood maintained a four-goal advantage to lead 16–12 at halftime.

The third quarter saw DSG raise the intensity even further. Their attacking structures became more effective, and their defence tightened around the ball. Capitalising on opportunities in the shooting circle, DSG edged the quarter 9–7 to reduce the deficit to just two goals at 23–21 heading into the final period.

With momentum swinging towards the visitors, DSG looked poised to draw level after converting a Kingswood centre pass and creating an opportunity to equalise. However, Kingswood responded when it mattered most. Regaining possession at a crucial stage, they shifted the momentum back in their favour through composed decision-making and disciplined execution.

The final quarter showcased Kingswood’s resilience and teamwork. Supported by an energetic home crowd, the hosts relied on their speed, trust, and structured play to finish strongly and pull away for a deserved 33–26 victory.

Kingswood captain Chloe Conyers once again led by example. Operating at Goal Attack, she produced a composed and commanding performance, controlling play in the shooting circle with intelligent movement and accurate finishing. Her leadership and calmness under pressure were instrumental in guiding her side to victory.

Co-captain Lucy Nagel anchored the defence with authority. An early intercept set the tone for an outstanding performance as she consistently disrupted DSG’s attacking flow and applied pressure throughout the contest.

In the centre court, Kate Wilson was influential in the Centre bib, linking attack and defence seamlessly while dictating the tempo of the game. Her work rate and composure ensured Kingswood maintained structure during key moments.

Shooter Leneo Gaopotlake delivered another impressive K-Day performance. At just 16 years old and playing in her second K-Day fixture, she provided a strong presence in the circle and combined effectively with Conyers. Her contribution in the closing stages proved crucial as Kingswood secured the result.

DSG, however, showed tremendous determination throughout the match and remained firmly in contention until the final quarter. Senna Mkolo was outstanding, featuring at both goal shooter and goal attack. Her movement, ability to create space, and willingness to work for turnovers in the midcourt kept DSG within striking distance, while her accuracy in the circle ensured they capitalised on opportunities.

Mkolo was also named Food Lovers Player of the Match for her outstanding performance during the encounter.

Centre court player Jubilee Mphela also made a significant impact, applying relentless pressure through the midcourt and producing several crucial tips and an intercept that helped DSG challenge for momentum.

Captain Lila de Romijn experienced a difficult start after being substituted early in the second quarter, but she responded admirably when reintroduced in the third period. As the game progressed, she grew in confidence and became increasingly influential, contributing to DSG’s strong comeback effort.

The victory marks a remarkable fifth consecutive K-Day win for Kingswood Netball and highlights the consistency of the programme. Special recognition goes to captains Conyers and Nagel, who have now celebrated four K-Day victories after both earning their first-team caps as Grade 9 players at just 15 years old.

Despite the weather disruptions and extended delays, the 2026 K-Day derby produced a contest worthy of the occasion. Both teams demonstrated skill, resilience, and sportsmanship, but it was Kingswood’s composure under pressure that ultimately proved decisive as they claimed another memorable K-Day triumph.
