Two goals by Lucy Holderness and a strike by Alexandra Ovendale secured a 3-0 victory for DSG Makhanda over Kingswood College on the weekend.
Meanwhile, the Kingswood boys’ side showed fight to overturn a two-goal deficit on their way to a 3-2 win against St Andrew’s College.
The two clashes, played at the Webster AstroTurf, formed part of the prestigious K-Day derby.
In last year’s meetings, DSG and St Andrew’s emerged victorious, with DSG scoring a dominant 6-2 win, while St Andrew’s managed a gritty 2-1 victory.
It was business as usual for the DSG girls, who entered the clash brimming with confidence after picking up some impressive wins in recent weeks.

Leading up to the clash, coach Geowynne Gamiet‘s side had beaten Eunice High 6-3 and Clarendon High School for Girls 10-0.
Kingswood, meanwhile, posted a 3-0 win against Westering in their last game before the Makhanda derby.
DSG started the clash like a house on fire and came close to scoring in the opening minutes.
They finally broke the deadlock late in the first chukka when a well-worked penalty corner variation ended with Lucy Holderness sending the ball into the back of the net for the game’s opener.
The hosts then dominated the second and third chukkas but were unable to turn their goal-scoring opportunities into goals. They enjoyed a fair share of possession and territory, but Kingswood’s defence held firm.
That changed in the fourth quarter, however. It began when Holderness doubled her side’s tally with a stupendous reverse stick shot.
Minutes later, Alexandra Ovendale demonstrated some impressive individual skills inside the circle to make it 3-0 and seal the derby bragging rights for DSG.

In the boys’ game, played on Thursday night, Kingswood delivered a never-say-die, gritty performance to overcome St Andrew’s in a cracker.
St Andrew’s was the favourite heading into the game, and they led 2-0 at the break, courtesy of a couple of brilliant goals by Luke Mason.
Kingswood pulled one back in the third chukka through Tyler Ray to change the complexion of the game. At the other end of the field, their goalkeeper, Aphelele Cromhout, pulled off some fantastic saves to keep their challenge alive.
With three minutes remaining in the fourth chukka, Kingswood levelled after Ray linked up with Luke Goldschmidt, who, on his second attempt, beat Scott Gordon in the St Andrew’s goal.
Goldschmidt wasn’t done, though, and, in a storybook finish, he scored the winning goal after pouncing on a loose ball inside the circle with 30 seconds to play.
The win was Kingswood’s first against their rivals since 2022, when they beat them 3-1.
