Some of KwaZulu-Natal’s top hockey-playing schools will go head-to-head at the annual Kearsney Hockey Fives, which takes place in Botha’s Hill from Friday, 21 August, to Sunday, 23 August.
The event features 25 teams competing in high school boys’ and girls’ sections, as well as a boys’ primary school section, which is the largest of the tournament.
Competition in the boys’ high school section takes place between Ashton International College (Ballito), Durban High School (DHS), Glenwood High, Hilton College, Kearsney College, Michaelhouse, and Westville Boys’ High. Glenwood is the lone newcomer.
Over the previous three editions of the event, Westville won the title in 2023, Hilton took the honours in 2024, and DHS won last year.
The girls’ high school competition features Ashton, Curro Hillcrest, Danville Park Girls’ High, Our Lady of Fatima, Maris Stella, and St Mary’s DSG.
St Anne’s was the winner of the inaugural girls’ event in 2023, while Danville Park shocked St Mary’s DSG in the 2024 final, but St Mary’s claimed the title in 2025.
They’ll be one of the favourites this time around, along with the newcomers, Our Lady of Fatima, who will be contesting the event for the first time.
The primary school festival features 12 teams: Ashton, Bonisanani Senior Primary (Ntuzuma), Chelsea Primary, Cowan House, Curro Salt Rock, Highbury Prep, Hillcrest Primary, Kloof Senior Primary, Penzance Primary, Reddam House Ballito, Umhlali Prep, and Winston Park Primary.
As the largest component of the Kearsney Hockey Fives, it is the only one that will feature play on Sunday, with prize-giving taking place at 10:45. The senior boys’ and girls’ sections finish on Saturday, with their prize-giving at 17:00.
The action begins on Friday at 07:30.
Hockey Fives is a dynamic, condensed version of traditional 11-a-side hockey, with five players per team competing on half the regulation-sized pitch and using boundary boards to keep the ball in play. Unlike traditional field hockey, goals can be scored from anywhere on the field.
Hockey Fives is also played at the Junior World Cup and Youth Olympics levels.
Entry to the event, backed by Halfway Ford Waterfall, is free, with ample secure parking available on the Kearsney College campus. The campus coffee shop will offer refreshments.
