The schoolboy hockey season might have wrapped up a week ago for many teams, but the last bit of action takes place in the Western Cape this weekend.

The four southern suburbs’ schools – Bishops, Rondebosch Boys’ High, South African College High School (SACS), and Wynberg Boys’ High – lock horns in their final matches of the season.

Rondebosch hosts Bishops in the famous Bish/Bosch derby at the Western Province Cricket Club (WPCC) on Friday at 19:10.

SACS, meanwhile, welcomes Wynberg to the Brewery AstroTurf. They play from 19:15.

Both matches will be broadcast LIVE on the SuperSport Schools App and on DStv Channel 216.

SACS vs Wynberg

It’s been quite the season for both SACS and Wynberg in 2026. Both sides have scored some big wins while being tested by some of their opponents, with SACS enjoying another strong campaign.

They’ve been beaten twice – by Northwood School and by Bishops, although they were missing their talisman, Litha Kraai, who was helping Western Province win the U21 Inter-Provincial Tournament, in the latter game. They’ve remained one of the country’s standard-setters, arguably still number one in the land.

They’ve dominated in the Western Cape, and the only blemishes on their record are those two defeats and, perhaps, two draws against their rival for the number one ranking, Paul Roos Gimnasium.

Wynberg started the season off on a high note at the Nomads Hockey Festival, upsetting Jeppe High School for Boys and Hilton CollegeThey progressed well, scoring notable wins over Grey High, Durbanville, and Parel Vallei.

Coach Devin Stanton, however, will not be pleased with his side’s inconsistency. They’ve struggled to build winning streaks. Last week, they drew 2-2 with Rondebosch, while SACS went down 2-3 against Bishops.

In the recent past, SACS has dominated Wynberg. Earlier this year, coach Sam Holmes’s side won 7-0, and in last year’s season finale, they won 9-1.

Although history is important for context, it will mean very little when the sides square off on Friday.

Both teams will bid farewell to their senior players, with SACS skipper Litha Kraai playing his final schoolboy game. Kraai has enjoyed an illustrious career in the blue and white, and he will look to sign off in the best way possible. Every other team in the country will breathe a sigh of relief and be glad to see the back of the human highlight reel.

Mohlodi Maseko also plays his final game, along with Daniel de Wet, Cameron Cordeiro, Chavez Sanger, Matthew Lassen, and Ethan October

On the Wynberg side, Chad Julius, Daniel Rightford, Michail Tarentaal, Lyle Martin, Noah Laubscher, and Mustafa Kajee play their final matches.

Rondebosch vs Bishops

The Bish/Bosch derby has dished up some thrilling encounters over the past seasons, and usually lives up to the expectations of an enthralling encounter. No matter which team is in form, it’s about which side rises to the occasion.

More of the same can be expected this year after both teams enjoyed successful seasons.

Rondebosch has been consistent for most of the season despite coming up short against some of the top guns. Before their 2-2 draw with Wynberg last week, they lost 2-4 against SACS, drew 1-1 with Paarl Boys’ High, and beat Stellenberg 3-1.

The last time they played Bishops, they went down 4-5 in an adrenaline-raising encounter at the Woodlands AstroTurf.

Bosch will be eager to find their early-season form, which brought them a bronze medal at the EHCO Trophy Tournament in The Netherlands in April.

For Bishops, Friday night’s showdown will be about doing the double against their rival and ending the year on a high note. Bishops has already beaten Wynberg twice this year, and they would be delighted to follow up with two wins over Rondebosch.

They welcome back the influential Callum Anderson, who led the SA u17 side to glory in the Zimbabwe Junior Hockey Series last week. ‘Bosch will also be boosted by the return of goalkeeper Arin Spiller, who was named the Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the same event.

Meanwhile, Daniel Fisher, Ben Hartman, Oliver Roach, Liam Marias, Marley Musasa, and Daniel Powell will play their final games for the hosts.

A large number of Bishops’ boys will play their last game for the school, including Luc Dicey, Cameron Macbeth, Ryan Whiffler, Harry Morgan (captain), Josh Huntingford, Matthew Edwards, Alexander Gordon, Litha Mbiko, and Troy Stockdale.

Both sides will be at full strength, and the crowd surrounding the Astro at the WPCC is sure to be electric.
