There was next to nothing to separate the sides when Paul Roos Gimnasium and Hoërskool Garsfontein met in a lung-busting U17 final at Paarl Gimnasium‘s Marius Schoeman Sevens on Saturday.
Their clash finished level at 19-19, leading to three minutes of extra time. When neither team scored, the Maroon Machine won the second Western Cape leg of the Clover High Schools Sevens Series by virtue of having scored first in the final.
While Ou Polla’s Boys have won Cup finals at the Marius Schoeman Sevens Festival in years gone by, Saturday was the first time that both their U15s and U17s won their respective Cups in the same year.
During the recently concluded rugby season, wing Cadynn Samuels caught the eye in the PRG 1st XV with his speed and agility. With those qualities to the fore, it came as no surprise when he was named the U17 Player of the Tournament.
Missing out on the title was tough on Garsies, who fought like lions to knock out Hoërskool Outeniqua 21-15 in the Cup quarterfinals, and Boland Landbou, the winner of the Hugenote Sevens, 31-17 in the Cup semifinals.
The Stellenbosch school also won the U15 Cup Final, overrunning Paarl Boys’ High 43-5 with a sizzling display of electric speed and skill.
Forward Liam Armitage, usually an eighthman in the 15-man game, received the player of the tournament accolade.
The PRG U15s also won the Hugenote Sevens, edging out Paarl Gimnasium by two points in a nail-biting final.
Both teams will be among the favourites at the Clover High School Sevens Series Champion of Champions tournament at North West University in Potchefstroom on Friday, 18 September and Saturday, 19 September.
The hosts, Paarl Gimnasium, were eliminated in key showdowns in the U17 and U15 Cup semifinals, with Paul Roos ousting Gimmies in the U17 competition, and Paarl Boys’ High downing the home team in the U15 event.
