Boland Landbou won the U17 Cup Final of the Cape Sevens tournament at Hoërskool Hugenote (Wellington) for the third time in the competition’s four years on Saturday, capturing the honours for a second successive year.
They won in a dominant style, defeating HTS Drostdy 33-0 in the final.
The Donkies, nonetheless, enjoyed a strong showing, with their U15s reaching the semi-finals, where they were beaten 24-5 by a clinical Paarl Gimnasium side.
In both age groups, the Drostdy backlines displayed a solid understanding of effective running rugby. A 12-12 Pool D draw with Stellenberg High in the U17 competition reflected the quality of both schools this season.
Paul Roos Gimnasium, like Boland Landbou, went back-to-back, edging out Paarl Gimnasium 14-12 in a thrilling U15 final.
Hoërskool Charlie Hofmeyr also impressed in the U15 age group, reaching the semi-finals before being defeated 43-12 by the Maroon Machine. Despite that loss, it was an impressive showing from Charlies, who were unbeaten in their group and then beat Stellenberg 14-7 in the quarter-finals.
Despite some strong showings from lesser-known sides, the recognised top guns, Paul Roos and Paarl Gim, lived up to their reputations, leaving no room for dark horses like Hoërskool Durbanville to stake a claim for the U15 Cup.
Until suffering a 22-0 loss to Gimmies in the quarter-finals, Durbies had looked like serious contenders.
Playing in Pool B, they defeated Zimbabwe’s Junior Sevens 38-7, the Forward Foundation 40-0, and narrowly lost 5-14 to Paul Roos.
The hosts, Hoërskool Hugenote, delivered some strong performances. In the U17 age group, they held the Paarl Gim Invitational team to a 12-12 draw. They also upset Paul Roos, beating the Stellenbosch side 26-19 in their final Pool B game.
