St Charles skittles Glenwood in big Eston T20 win

After a one-run win over Maritzburg College on 8 September, St Charles College charged to a second One Insurance Eston T20 Night League win on Tuesday, thumping Glenwood High by 82 runs at the Beaumont Eston Farmers Club.

A closely-contested match appeared to be on the cards after Glenwood dismissed St Charles for 106, picking up the Pietermaritzburg side’s tenth wicket off the last ball of the innings.

However, the Green Machine‘s reply faltered early. They had lost three wickets by the time they reached double figures, and from there the collapse accelerated.

After the toss went Glenwood’s way, they inserted St Charles to bat, and their bowlers did a good job to restrict Saints to 106 all out. That left the Durban school needing to score at 5.35 runs per over to win. Batting was not easy, however.

Both sides struggled at the crease. Ryan Clarke‘s 19 off 19 balls was the highest score of the match. Owen Widdows and Lebo Mokoena almost matched Clarke, with both contributing 18, but St Charles only just scraped triple figures, bowled out for 106.

Spinner Esihle Gasa, who shared the new ball with Qhamani Sikutshwa, was the leading Glenwood bowler, returning late in the innings to claim the last three wickets, which left him with a tidy return of 3/13 from four overs.

Vincenzo Loutz played his part, snapping up 2/10 in two overs, and Bayanda Xulu got rid of the opening pair, on his way to figures of 2/25 in three overs.

When Glenwood batted, Ryan Clarke and Lebo Mokoena joined forces to remove Glenwood’s top three within the first five overs for only 10 runs. Mokoena added a further two wickets to finish with a telling 4/16 from four overs.

Jayden Saville, who captured 5/37 for Switzerland against the Isle of Man in an ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup European Division 2 Qualifier in July, surpassed that return, however, destroying the Glenwood innings with a remarkable 5/3 from just two overs.

The Green Machine tumbled from 10/3 after 4.4 overs to only 24 all out after nine, leaving St Charles with a big 82-run victory.
