The South Africa Schools Hockey Association (SASHOC) unveiled star-studded SA u18A and u18B girls’ squads after the conclusion of the SASHOC National Week in Hilton on Saturday.
The national selectors also announced the SA u17 and SA Fives teams.
Lenique Vogel, who collected the Player of the Tournament award for her exploits for Northern Gauteng A, leads the list of talented players who will represent South Africa in the next few months. She helped Northerns reach the final, where they lost to Western Province A.
Annika Kloppers and Amogelang Motlatle, also from Northerns, joined her in the SA squad.
Western Province A’s run to the title was in large part because of Peyton Marais’ heroics in goal. The national selectors rewarded her brilliance by handing her the Most Valuable Goalkeeper accolade. She was one of three Province players who made the cut. The other two were Inam Gungubele and Chelsey McGregor.
To no one’s surprise, Kirstin Booysen received the Most Valuable Defender award, despite her side failing to reach the semifinals. The Southern Free State A defender stood firm at the back and was an example of great defending for many. Her teammate, Marlene du Plessis, also made the cut.
Eastern Province A improved on their fourth-place finish last year and finished third this time around because of their strong midfielders. Kerrin Gillies won many battles in the middle of the park and was instrumental in many of her team’s moves into the opposition half. She took home the Most Valuable Midfielder award.
Lucy Holderness, also a midfielder for Eastern Province, joined Gillies in the SA side.
KwaZulu-Natal Coastal’s Jamie da Silva was one of four Coastal players, three of them from St Mary’s DSG, who were picked for the SA u18A side. The forward, who troubled opposition defenders, was named the Most Valuable Striker at the awards ceremony. Her teammates, Ella Bowyer, Jenna-Leigh Freese, and Asanele Zuma, also cracked the nod.

Boland A, who performed well in the pool stage of the competition, had three representatives included: Katherine Sickle, Chelsey Woolf, and Sarah-Ellen Groenewald.
Border A was on the other end of the spectrum. They struggled to get going early on, but the selectors could not look past Busiwe Mayekiso’s brilliance and added her to the SA line-up.
Alanda Rademeyer, of Boland A, who lit up the tournament with her goal-scoring prowess, finished the tournament as the top goalscorer, with six. She is the only player from her province in a talented SA u17 side.
The champions, Province, had three players included: Jamie Gall, Heather Kane, and Juané Meiring. Jessica Paverd from Western Province B was also called up to the u17 side.
Southern Gauteng A was one of four teams with two players picked for the u17 side, with Emily Quinton and Giovanna Abrahams receiving national recognition.
Eastern Province had Kiyara Constable and Emihle Mazomba included. Northern Gauteng A supplied Kaylan Crawford and Aphelele Mbatsha, and Southern Free State A’s representatives were Daniella Grobbelaar and Kayla Du Preez.
Beayu Chiang, Natalie Jardim, Sinothando Lujabe, Ziyanda Mchunu, and Nicole Smuts fly the flags of KZN Inland, Eastern Gauteng, Border A, KZN Coastal, and Southern Gauteng B, respectively.
