Paarl Gimnasium hosts the Marius Schoeman Sevens tournament this weekend, the season’s second Clover High Schools Sevens Series event in the Western Cape.
This year, the Marius Schoeman Sevens, named after the Paarl Gim old boy and former Blitzbok star, celebrates its 10th year, and the competition promises to be as thrilling as ever.
The games will be played on Friday, 4 September, and Saturday, 5 September, with matches in the U15 and U17 age groups taking place between 13:30 and 20:30 on the opening day.

On Saturday, the playoffs begin, starting at 08:00. The U15 Cup final takes place at 15:20, followed by the U17 Cup final at 15:40.
The hosts were dominant in last year’s edition, lifting the Cup in both age groups.
After a dominant run in the U15 category at the Hugenote Cape Sevens last weekend, they fell just short of the title, falling to a slim 12-14 defeat to Paul Roos Gimnasium in the Cup final.
Charlie Hofmeyr‘s U15s bear watching. They made it to the semifinals in Wellington, and running rugby is a trademark of their game.
With 16 competitors in each age group, the current Cup holders will face a stern examination.
Both age groups promise some bangers in the group stage. Some that catch the eye at a glance are Hoërskool Melkbosstrand and Durbanville in the U17 age group, while the meeting between Boland Landbou and Oakdale Landbou in the U15 age group will be a crowd-puller.
The Paarl Farmers won the U17 Cup for the third time in four years at last week’s Cape Sevens, while Paul Roos repeated as U15 champions.
At Paarl Gim, Boland Landbou will be viewed as a dark horse. Speaking of horses, or Donkies rather, HTS Drostdy faced the Farmers in the Cup Final at Hugenote. They were well beaten in the title game, but are capable of better.
Hoërskool Bellville, Stellenberg, and Durbanville showed that northern suburbs’ sevens rugby is in a healthy state, producing some notable results last week.
Stellies drew 12-12 against Drostdy in a pool game, while Durbies made it to the Cup semifinals, where they narrowly lost 12-14 to the eventual champion, Boland Landbou. Bellville’s Kwaggas slipped to a slim 21-22 defeat against the hosts, Hugenote, who were clearly strengthened by the support of their home crowd.
In short, Gimmies will need to be on their game if they are to continue their dominance at home.
