Emily Krige scored the all-important goal in the Western Province girls’ u14 side’s 1-0 win over KwaZulu-Natal Coastal in the final of their SASHOC Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) match at King Edward VII School (KES) on Monday morning.
The win lifted Province’s inter-provincial title-winning success to three in the past seven days. Their u18 team clinched the senior girls’ title in Pietermaritzburg over the weekend, and the Western Province u13 girls claimed top honours in their section at the beginning of the month.
Province made a strong start to the title game, and their industry delivered an early reward when they scored in the eighth minute. Krige, who was standing close to the penalty spot, received a pass from the right flank and guided the ball into the back of the net to give her side the advantage.
Although plenty of time remained in the contest, and the teams threw everything they had at each other, none of their hard work resulted in a goal.
Western Province’s title-winning run was impressive. They conceded only one goal in the entire tournament.
Playing in Pool Z, they defeated Mpumalanga 3-0 in their first match, then overcame Eastern Province 1-0 in the second, before edging out Northern Free State 1-0 in their final pool match.
In the quarterfinals, Province beat Border 2-1. That was the first and last time any side breached their defences.
In another tight clash, Western Province held off Northern Gauteng 1-0 in the semi-finals, and they repeated that result in the final against KZN Coastal to record their fourth 1-0 victory in six matches, which spoke volumes about their big match temperament.
Talia Ferreira, Province’s captain, was her team’s joint-highest goal scorer, alongside Kate Paxton, with both netting twice. Carina Thomas, Ntsako Mkhonto, Nea Wessels, and AnnaBelle Fourie also contributed vital goals.
U13 IPT
Matters were far more comfortable for the Western Province u13 side, who beat Southern Free State 4-0 in the final in Johannesburg on 1 July. Aliana Franken struck twice, and Luniko Dziba and Salma Sonday slotted, too, as Province rolled to the title at King Edward VII (KES).
Province was the clear class of the field, scoring 20 goals without reply on their way to the summit of Pool W. They opened their campaign with a 4-0 win over Eastern Gauteng, overwhelmed Northern Cape 10-0 in their next match, and then dispatched KZN Inland 6-0.
In the quarterfinals, they allowed a goal, the only one they conceded all tournament long, in a comfortable 4-1 win over Boland. Next, they accounted for KZN Coastal in the semifinals, winning 3-0.
In the title decider, Franken, who finished the tournament with an impressive 13 goals, opened the scoring for Province in the 14th minute. Three minutes later, she doubled her tally and Province’s lead. Lunika made it 3-0 in the 31st minute, before Sonday put a bow on it in the 46th minute.
