With another win on Sunday, Kaizer Chiefs remains top of the Gauteng Development League (GDL) standings, but the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, closed the gap by picking up two victories.
On Thursday, the University of Pretoria (Tuks) hosted Sundowns, their Pretoria neighbours, in a Tshwane derby for a GDL catch-up match at their home ground. The visitors scored a 2-1 win.
Thabang Makoba netted both goals for Bafana Ba Style, the first assisted by Ntokozo Madondo and the second by Neo Modisane.
On Saturday, the Brazilians followed up with a comfortable 5-0 victory over Wits Juniors.
Awakhe Mthiyane opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, assisted by Nkanyiso Maqhasha.
Just before halftime, Ntokozo Madondo scored the second goal. It was the first of a hat-trick, and assisted by Luthando Mkhize.
Madondo added his second goal three minutes into the second half, with Mkhize setting him up again, and the duo combined for a third in the 57th minute. Junior Masoeu slotted Sundowns’ fifth, thanks to Siyabonga Mbongo‘s approach work.
With the six points from two wins in the bag, Mamelodi Sundowns are now on 47 points, while Chiefs are on 55 points.
On Sunday, the Phefeni Glamour Boys maintained their impressive form, scoring a convincing 3-0 victory over Highlands Park in one of the weekend’s most anticipated GDL fixtures.
Third-placed Randburg kept pace with the front-runners, romping to a 5-0 victory over last-placed Seven’s Academy on Saturday.
On Sunday, Rockefvs, in fourth, defeated Future of Africa 3-0. Remothabetse Dithathe opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, followed by his second goal just four minutes later, assisted by Sibusiso Vilakazi.
Mohau Mabusela sealed the victory with a third goal just before halftime.
Fifth-placed Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA) hosted the Africa School of Excellence at the President Park Stadium in Vereeniging. Neither team had their scoring boots on, and the contest finished in a scoreless draw.
Siwelele, who charged out of the gate at the start of the season, has lost momentum, and they’re now in sixth place. On Saturday, they ceded further ground after playing to a 1-1 draw with Prestige Football Development Academy.
In other matches on Saturday, Pitso Mosimane Youth Football (PMYF) secured a 2-0 victory over Kathorus Hyper Academy, Jomo Cosmos and Joburg City drew 1-1, and Panorama claimed a narrow 2-1 victory over Tuks.
