St John’s College made light work of Dr Malan‘s challenge, while Jeppe High School for Boys registered a comfortable win over King Edward VII (KES) in their Johnny Waite T20 Tournament contests on Wednesday.
Playing at home on the Mitchell Oval, St John’s romped to a 10-wicket win with almost half their innings.
After the Blues‘ captain, Joshua Hall, opted to bowl first, Juan de Villiers answered his skipper’s call and led the charge as the home side limited Dr Malan to 127/6.
That appeared to be a decent total, but the St John’s opening batsmen were untroubled, charging to 128/0 in just 10.4 overs.
Dr Malan’s opening pair, Ruben Muller (35) and Gianluca Morrico (17), gave them a solid start with a 58-run opening stand from 47 balls. Then De Villiers accounted for both batsmen to tilt the contest in the Blues’ favour.
Adriaan Greyling, who replaced Morrico, held things together in the second half of the innings, with a steady, unbeaten 26 from 25 balls. However, he was forced to watch his teammates come in, try to increase the run rate, and then depart.
De Villiers was the biggest thorn in Dr Malan’s side, claiming 3/21 from four overs. Herman Basson and Alan McFerren each took a wicket, while St John’s ran out a batsman for their sixth wicket.
The hosts needed to bat at 6.4 runs per over to win. They didn’t hang around, however.
Bryn Gilmour commandeered the run chase, slamming five fours and five sixes in an aggressive 62 from just 32 deliveries, while his opening partner, Luke Fry, hit seven fours and a six in his 53 not out from 34 balls.
Jeppe High School for Boys vs King Edward VII
Vegas Scott showed great leadership acumen as he inspired Jeppe to a seven-wicket win over KES on the AH Childe Oval at Jeppe on Wednesday.
The skipper, who won the toss and chose to bowl first, rotated his bowlers well to help his side restrict the visitors to 161/7 from their 20 overs.
Morné Steyn top-scored with 38 not out, while Cian Sullivan weighed in with 31, and Blaine Candy with 26. Ethan Ferguson caused the visitors problems, however, knocking over 3/29, while Goolam Ahmed picked up 2/36.
Scott led his side’s reply, taking the attack to the KES bowlers and scoring an unbeaten 75 from 55 deliveries to steer his team to 163/3 with eight balls remaining in the innings.
His knock featured three sixes and three fours, and he shared a match-winning 80-run opening stand with Asher Aitken from just 40 balls. Scott contributed 25 runs from 19 balls to that partnership, while Aitken, the aggressor, powered to a brisk 51 from 31 deliveries.
Following Aitken’s dismissal in the eighth over, Scott took the reins.
KES struck two more times with the ball, dismissing Ethan van Dyke (5) and Lincoln Casais (18) in the 12th and 17th overs, but that wasn’t enough to stop the hosts’ march to victory as Scott saw Jeppe home with an unbroken 19-run fourth-wicket partnership with Goolam Ahmed (8*).
