Cale Price struck an imperious century, and James Fullbrook captured a telling six-wicket haul as Pearson overran Kingswood College by an emphatic 228 runs in a limited-overs match in Gqeberha on Saturday.
Price’s ton powered Pearson to a hefty 386/6 from their 50 overs. Then Fullbrook led the charge with the ball as Pearson skittled Kingswood for 158 in only 28.1 overs.
Price opened the batting with Callum Peltenburg, but did not face a ball until the third over. Peltenburg, who made 39, was on strike for the first 12 deliveries of the contest.
However, when he got his opportunity, Price responded like a player who had paid attention to what he had seen and was eager to put the lessons he had learned to good use while making up for lost time. He blocked the first three balls he faced before getting off the mark with a boundary. He did not look back.
In a 109-ball stay, he struck 18 fours and five sixes, which made up 102 runs of his outstanding 145.
Price spent just under 35 overs in the middle and was part of two match-defining partnerships. The first was a 124-run opening stand with Peltenburg from only 88 deliveries. That was followed by a 132-run second-wicket stand between Price and Connor Thomas, whose contribution was 35 runs.
Callum Armstrong replaced Price at the crease and ensured he kept the momentum going, pitching in with 59 from just 44 balls and partnering Zaine Scholtz in an 89-run fifth-wicket stand to which Scholtz contributed 38 runs.
Kingswood had a mountain to climb, needing to score at 7.74 runs per over to win. James Fullbrook made sure they didn’t come close.
After becoming the fifth bowler to take the ball, he ripped through Kingswood’s middle order before destroying their tail on his way to a decisive haul of 6/33 from 10 overs, which included two maidens and 42 dot balls from his 60 deliveries. It was his ability to keep the Kingswood batsmen quiet for extended periods that forced them into making mistakes.
Fullbrook also had Jean Schultz to thank for providing a foundation from which he could attack. Schultz dismissed both Kingswood openers, sending Daniel Jakins packing for 15 and Simon Sheard for 58, the top score of the innings. Sheard’s impressive knock took only 47 balls and included 11 fours and a six.
He and Jakins shared a 60-run opening partnership before Schultz dismissed Jakins in the 10th over, followed by Sheard two overs later. Their exit started Kingswood’s slide.
From 82/2, they fell to 158 all out, with the last eight wickets falling for only 76 runs, with Chris Zimmerman making 25 and Chad Roodt 20.
Schultz’s important spell brought him 2/23 from four overs, while Callum Armstrong and Zaine Scholtz chipped in with a single wicket each.
