The Gauteng Development League (GDL) returned to action with a bang on the weekend after a mid-year hiatus.
Kaizer Chiefs, who led the league standings at the break, having also secured the GDL Top 8 title earlier this year, and then won the Gauteng Engen Knockout Challenge, faced Rockefvs, one of the season’s surprise teams, which has consistently ranked among the top four and even led the GDL earlier in the season.
On Saturday, they delivered another memorable performance, stunning the Phefeni Glamour Boys 2-0. With the win, Rockefvs matched Mamelodi Sundowns’ points tally. The defending champions, who are in second place, drew 1-1 with Randburg.
Just ten minutes into the match, David Stober put Randburg ahead against the Brazilians at the Groenkloof University of Pretoria Campus. Sundowns rescued a point with an equaliser in the second half.
Fourth-placed Siwelele, who have fallen from the top position they held during the initial weeks of the season, were held to a goalless draw by mid-table Highlands Park, a team that has been unusually quiet by their high standards this season.
At the Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong, the hosts, Kathorus Hyper Academy, the runner-up to Chiefs in the Gauteng Engen Knockout Challenge, faced Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA). Their clash also failed to deliver any goals, resulting in both teams earning a point each.
On Saturday, Jomo Cosmos defeated the Africa School of Excellence 2-0.
Nkosinathi Mbatha of Wits Juniors was a key contributor to his side’s 2-1 victory over Future of Africa, scoring the all-important goals, with both assisted by Okuhle Chiya.
Joburg City and Seven’s Academy played to a 1-1 draw.
The Pitso Mosimane Youth Football (PMYF) and the University of Pretoria (Tuks) met in Sunday’s only match at the Tsakane Stadium.
PMYF, owned by former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane, who also celebrated his birthday on Sunday, secured a narrow 3-2 victory.
Mikhulu Booi was the hero for PMYF, netting a hat trick, which included one penalty. Dalcino Solomons and Lethabo Kubayi set him up for his other two goals.
