Reddam House Constantia‘s Emily Hougaard was on fire in a Western Province rain Schools SA20 clash with the Victoria Hub on Friday, cracking 22 fours and three sixes in an astounding, record-setting knock of 157 not out off only 66 deliveries.
She received solid support from Isobel Lear, who weighed in with 40, as the pair joined forces for a 159-run third-wicket partnership, which helped to propel Reddam to an intimidating 263/4.
Given Reddam’s robust total, the 2/34 that Zaurah Titus claimed in four overs was quite a feat.
Titus then faced the first ball of the home side’s innings and went on to lead the way with the bat, hitting five fours in her 58 off 48 deliveries.
She and her opening partner, Zandré Jacobs, who tallied 19, made 59 runs for the first wicket, but once they were parted, the Hub slumped from 59/1 to 103 all out, leaving Reddam House Constantia with a big 158-run victory.
Jessica Hendricks was the pick of the Reddam bowlers, knocking over 4/22, while Abigail French picked up 2/22, and Jennalee Simpson wrapped up the innings by claiming 2/19, including the last wicket to fall.
In the quarterfinals of the Boland rain Schools SA20 competition, despite playing at home, HTS Drostdy was the underdog against Paarl Gimnasium. They made their home field advantage count, however, winning by four wickets on the Dawie de Lange Oval to record a first-ever win over Gimmies at the 1st XI level
Paarl Gim won the toss and opted to bat first, and, as he so often does, opener Enré van Zyl gave the side a solid start, making 53 off 42 balls, hitting six fours and a six. He and Nico Smit, who chipped in with a run-a-ball 19, mustered 58 runs for the third wicket.
The Donkies’ opening bowler, Jannes Krynauw, who was later named the man of the match, captured 3/28 in four overs.
His excellent bowling was backed up by Drostdy’s sharp fielding, which included Leonaydio Mackenzie running out a batsman with a direct hit. After 20 overs, Gimmies had been restricted to 143/7.
In reply, Drostdy’s openers, M-Jay van Reenen and captain DJ Luck, rocketed out of the blocks, sharing a 52-run opening stand off just 25 deliveries. Van Reenen was explosive, slamming five fours and two sixes in a rapid 32 off 14 balls, while Luck hammered a four and five sixes in his hasty 38 off 23.
Paarl Gim fought back, though, adding another five wickets by the time Drostdy reached triple figures, including two wickets in an over from De Waal Vivier, which left the hosts on 100/6. Vivier finished with 2/34 from four, the lone Paarl Gim bowler to pick up more than one wicket.
Dawid Kamfer and Wynand Stofberg turned the tide, however, wrestling the momentum from the visitors by adding an unbroken 46 for the sixth wicket, with Kamfer stroking two fours in his 21 off 29 balls, and Stofberg contributing 27 off 26, including three fours and a six.
They overhauled the Paarl Gim total in the 19th over to make history for their school.
In Malmesbury, Paarl Boys’ High overwhelmed Hoërskool Swartland, powering their way to victory in the fifth over of their reply.
Swartland batted first but came up against an unrelenting Boishaai bowling attack and were dismissed for only 46 in the 14th over. Only David Bierman, batting at 10, made it into double figures, hitting two fours in his 10 runs off 12 balls.
Divan Fourie snapped up 3/10, and Ra-eez Isaacs captured 3/13, while Mijan Herholdt nabbed 2/3 from three overs, and AB Jacobs collected 2/14.
Boishaai opener Gillmer Horn is just 14 years old. However, he is already one of the best 1st XI batsmen in the country, and he put his talent on show, striking two fours and two sixes in an unbeaten 25 off only 14 deliveries, driving his side to 49/2 in the fifth over of their reply.
Stiaan Kotze claimed 2/33 for Swartland, but the home side’s bowlers had far too few runs to defend, and Paarl Boys’ High won by eight wickets.
