Rondebosch Boys’ High’s Timothy Short did well to keep his side’s innings alive on Saturday, weighing in with an unbeaten 79 runs to help the visitors to last the full 50 overs in their southern suburbs derby against Wynberg Boys’ High at the Jacques Kallis Oval.
When Lady Luck favoured Wynberg, they chose to bowl first. With pace bowler Damien Harris in fine form, that paid off.
He knocked over 3/35 in eight overs, and Raihan Khan fared well, too, claiming 2/20 from six.
At one point in the 21st over, Bosch was in trouble, on 63/5. They fought back through Matthew Brooks, who joined Short for a 66-run sixth-wicket partnership, and contributed his fair share of 32 runs.
Raa’id Davids, batting at nine, was part of another important partnership that featured Short. He assisted with 17 runs in their 52-run eighth-wicket stand, and Rondebosch went on to reach 212/9 from their 50 overs.
Wynberg’s reply began well, with openers Matthew Saunders and Yaqeen Gamieldien putting on 55 for the first wicket.
Saunders top-scored, striking two fours and a six in his steady 55 off 110 deliveries, while Gamieldien contributed four fours in his 27.
Short was again to the fore and was unlucky not to claim a wicket in his impactful and miserly 0/14 from seven overs. Meanwhile, Arin Spiller was both lethal and economical for the visitors, snapping up 4/15 across eight overs.
If all-rounder Eli Aufrichtig doesn’t provide a noticeable contribution, then Bosch must not have played. He played his part by capturing the vital wickets of Matthew Mills and Captain Michail Tarentaal before they could move beyond single digits, going on to record 2/44 from 10 overs, and Matthew Brooks clamped down on the hosts’ run scoring, nabbing 2/16 from seven.
After 48 overs, Wynberg was dismissed for 179, leaving Rondebosch with a 33-run win.
In the U14A fixture between the two schools, Wynberg bounded to an 111-run win after bowling out Bosch for just 30 runs.
Cameron Quinn claimed 5/8 and Ruben Coetzee took 3/14, while Callan de Bruyn was unlucky to miss out on a half-century, finishing unbeaten on 49 in Wynberg’s 141-run total.
With that eye-catching win, Wynberg’s U14A side will be one to keep an eye on.
In a George derby, Hoërskool Outeniqua faced York High in a limited-overs affair.
After being sent in to bat first by the visitors, Outeniqua’s captain, Hanno Swart, led from the front, stroking six fours in a brilliant, unbeaten 103 off 111 deliveries.
He partnered Ross Taljaard for 88 runs for the fourth wicket, with Taljaard making 37 as the hosts tallied 235/7.
Christian van Zyl claimed 3/51 for York, while Ethan Botha took 2/31, and Jordan Ross picked up 2/51.
The visitors were unable to challenge Outeniqua’s 235 runs, mustering only 135 in reply before being bowled out in the 44th over.
Christian van Zyl, at nine, and Ethan Cox, at seven, were the only two York batsmen to score 20 or more. Van Zyl top-scored, hitting three fours in an otherwise conservative 25 off 48 balls, while Cox also found the boundary three times in his 20.
Johalin Oosthuizen kept York on the hop, racking up an impressive 4/23 across 10 overs, while Ewald Terblanche returned 2/26 from seven, and Idan Balzun secured the last wicket to end with 2/24.
