Choosing to bowl first paid off for Bishops in a 50-over southern suburbs’ derby contest against SACS at the Frank Reid Oval on Saturday.

Bishops‘ bowler Imraan Leith responded with a man-of-the-match-winning spell that brought him an eye-popping 5/11 from eight overs.

Waco Bassick also made life difficult for the SACS batsmen, and chipped in with a tight 2/19 from 10 overs, and Matthew Schultz snapped up 2/17 from five as the visitors struggled to only 74 all out in 30 overs.

Benjamin Blackburn, batting at six, was the sole batsman to reach double figures, compiling a cautious 19 not out off 62 balls, but 27 extras helped.

Bishops lost three wickets before they secured victory.

Old School

Harry Morgan led their run chase, hitting two fours and two sixes in the innings’ top score of 27 off 28 balls, while Waco Bassick hurried them across the line, matching Morgan’s haul of boundaries, to finish with an unbeaten 23 off 12 deliveries.

By the 12th over, when they reached 75/3, a seven-wicket victory belonged to Bishops.

Luke Horan was the most effective SACS bowler, claiming 1/14 in three overs.

Parklands College vs Curro Durbanville

In another limited-overs affair, opener Ethan Randall struck a phenomenal 129 off 98 balls for Parklands College against Curro Durbanville.

He cracked 12 fours and four sixes in his century and shared a 106-run opening stand with Joshua Neil, who scored a handy 40.

Bokmoso Lukhele weighed in with 34, while the home side’s total was further boosted by 44 extras, of which 27 were wides. That helped them to 287 all out in 48 overs.

Landseer Collen, who took the final wicket, continued his strong wicket-taking form, capturing 3/44, while Keenan Moore claimed 2/41 across 10 overs.

Collen then demonstrated his all-round ability with a fiery knock. Batting aggressively, he struck four fours and four sixes in a quickfire 54 from only 33 balls.

Yaqeen Cassiem mustered four fours in a more circumspect 36 off 74 balls, and the pair put together 85 runs for the third wicket.

JP Smith, batting at six, just missed out on a century as Curro staged a brave run chase. He hammered seven fours and six sixes in an electric 91 off 49 deliveries.

Still, that wasn’t enough. Curro needed more partnerships and, in the end, they were bowled out for 267 in the 39th over, leaving Parklands College with a hard-fought 20-run victory.

The Parklands’ bowlers shared the wickets, with Yaseen Salie going at eight runs per over, but claiming 3/64 from his eight overs. Adam Muller took 2/31 across four, Joshua Neil bowled a tidy 10 to snare 2/35, and Blaine Fisher secured the win by capturing the last wicket in his fifth over, ending with 2/47.

DF Akademie vs Stellenberg High

In Cape Town’s northern suburbs, DF Akademie (DF) hosted Stellenberg High. After a tremendous 50-over battle, DF, the underdogs, pulled off a remarkable one-wicket triumph.

Stellies won the coin flip and decided to bat first. Aidan Pienaar and Captain Francois Hugo, batting at three and four, spearheaded their effort, with both scoring more than twice as many runs as the next highest run scorers.

Pienaar stroked seven fours in his 42, while Hugo top-scored for the visitors, matching Pienaar’s seven fours, and tallying 45 as Stellenberg High totalled 152 all out.

DF’s Renier Keyser claimed 2/18, and Keegan Deyzel collected 2/41 from 10 overs, before Juan Burger snatched a miserly 3/14 across six overs to bring the visitors’ innings to an end in the 44th over.

The home side’s successful run chase owed plenty to number three batsman, Justin van Rensburg, whose resilient and undefeated 74 off 123 was a match-winning knock.

Largely thanks to his batting performance, DF Akademie grabbed a hard-earned one-wicket win when they reached 156/9 in the 48th over.

If Aidan Pienaar was able to bowl more than 10 overs, the result might have been different. He finished with a brilliant 4/14.

Gideon Wasserman snaffled 2/32 from 10, and Tiaan Barnard took 2/33, but it was DF Akademie’s day.
