Paul Roos Gimnasium‘s Janko Webb turned his side’s rain Schools SA20 showdown with Somerset College on the Taberer Oval on Wednesday into an explosive showcase, hammering an extraordinary 158 runs off only 63 balls.
His remarkable onslaught, which featured 25 boundaries – 14 sixes and 11 fours – powered Paul Roos to 277/4, which, unsurprisingly, put them out of reach of the hosts.
He received solid support from Jason Moodie and Marcus Conradie, who weighed in with 35 runs each.
Moodie’s runs came from only 21 balls and included three fours and two sixes, while Conradie struck a four and four maximums in an entertaining 19-ball stay. He also shared a 96-run third-wicket partnership with Webb.
Samarth Sreedhar claimed 1/26 from two overs, but Paul Roos batted at an intimidating 13.85 runs per over.
Somerset College was unable to challenge PRG’s massive total and mustered only 106/6 in reply. Their talisman, Owethu Moyi, played well for 48 off 36 balls, with four fours, while Troy Varie chipped in with 20 not out.
Marcus Conradie picked up 2/18 in a two-over spell. While many of his peers went wicketless, they bowled economically to control the home side’s run chase.
Paul Roos was also sharp in the field, with Christiaan Fouché running out two batsmen, and Dion Slabber another as the visitors cruised to an emphatic 171-run victory.
At the Frank Reid Oval, on Tuesday, Bishops hosted the Khayelitsha Hub in a Western Province rain Schools SA20 match.
Despite playing away from home, the Hub gave Bishops a serious go, eventually going down by only 11 runs.
Batting first, Bishops put up 157/6.
Opener Shafiek Joseph produced a solid knock at the top of the order, hitting four fours in a 50-ball 43. Robbie Vintcent, at four, then top-scored for Bishops with 50 off 37, thumping four fours and two sixes. He and Joseph partnered for 83 for the third wicket.
The Hub’s Ntando Ham picked up 2/21 from three overs, while Ahluma Rhululu snaffled 2/25 from four.
Set 158 to win, the Khayelitsha Hub made a positive start to their run chase, with Avuya Buti stroking four fours in his 29 from only 23 balls.
Number four batsman, Unathi Magoloza, top-scored with 40 not out from 42 deliveries, which included three fours and a six, but it was not quite enough.
Matthew Schultz was the only Bishops’ bowler to remove more than one batsman, capturing 2/28 from his four overs. Some tight fielding, however, helped the home side to restrict the Hub to 146/5.
