Hilton College’s defence of the Primo Big 10 title got off to a stuttering start as they won one and lost two matches on Saturday on their home turf. Westville Boys’ High and Glenwood enjoyed successful first days of the two-day tournament.

In the opening match of the event on Zungu Field, Glenwood, the 2024 champion of the Primo Big 10 and the current Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) Coastal A-League champion, claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Hilton College.
That defeat, however, spurred the defending champion to regroup and respond with a solid 3-1 win over Clifton College. Although Hilton’s spirits may have been lifted following that victory, they again found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 result, going down to Northwood in their third match.

Glenwood took on Clifton in their second match. The teams had drawn recently at the Kearsney Soccer Tournament, but this time the Green Machine took charge and powered to a 5-0 victory. In their final match of the first day, Glenwood scrapped their way to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Durban High School (DHS).
Another team that made a strong impression was Westville Boys’ High, who started their Primo Big 10 campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over Maritzburg College. The Griffins then secured a 1-0 win against St Charles College before ending their day with a 2-0 win over their neighbours, Kearsney College.
Kearsney found the going tough. They also fell to a 0-3 loss against Maritzburg College and were held to a 1-1 draw by St Charles College.
Northwood’s Knights have been on a strong run, including winning all five of their matches at the Association of Public Boys’ Schools of South Africa Football Festival during the mid-year holiday. On Saturday, they recorded a 3-1 victory over DHS and a 1-0 win against Hilton College. Then they lost 1-2 to Clifton, whom they had beaten 2-0 the previous weekend, which underlined just how tight the competition is.
Michaelhouse drew goalless against St Charles College and Maritzburg College.
