Fiery SACS aiming for an upset against Wynberg in King Price Derby Series banger

After suffering a narrow loss to Rondebosch last weekend, Wynberg’s sights are set on a winning end to the season at SACS. Photo: Wynberg Boys’ High multimedia team.

Wynberg Boys’ High flyhalf, Achmat Behardien, was one of the star performers for the South Africa (SA) u18 team in their recent international series.

He’ll return one last time for his school in Saturday’s King Price Derby Series showdown, which takes place on Memorial A Field at SACS. The kickoff is at 12:30.

SACS last defeated Wynberg on 1 June 2024, 30-29, so they’ll be laser-focused on improving on their record of one win in their last five meetings with Wynberg when the teams meet on Saturday.

Last weekend, SACS overwhelmed Bishops 55-22, while Wynberg’s bid for a southern suburb’s slam came to a 29-33 loss at Rondebosch Boys’ High on the same day.

When they met on 13 June, it was right-wing, Zachary de Kock‘s day, and he scored a hat-trick of tries in ‘Berg‘s 26-15 victory.

It will be the last match in charge for Wynberg’s Director of Rugby, Nic Groom. It’s a special fixture, he said: “Every time we play each other, the result is never a foregone conclusion.

“Every game at every level will have its share of emotion, drama, and probably tears of joy and sadness.

“It’s a brilliant occasion for everyone involved, and it’s the fixture we look forward to the most.”

Hooker Naeem Mohammed has been a try-scoring threat for Wynberg all season long, directing the rolling maul and scoring off the back of it, as he did last weekend against Rondebosch. His opposite number, SACS hooker and captain Zac Dall, has also been a regular try scorer in recent matches, which included a brace against Bishops.

Flyhalf Jake Dave pulls the strings for SACS. He has enjoyed a superb season. In his last three matches, he has scored 49 points for his side. In a close contest, he’ll have a shot at clinching glory off the kicking tee.

In an interesting change to the pack, Cameron Hirst shifts from lock to eighthman. That could open up a third strong lineout option for the home side, while also freeing up Hirst to challenge Wynberg more with his physical carries and hard-hitting tackling.

‘Berg will feel that they have the star power required to seal the deal with some creative plays among their own backs. Behardien will dictate the tempo, while outside backs Chad Campbell and Matthew Anthony are often as elusive as De Kock out wide.

Looking back on the 2026 season, Groom said: “I’m extremely proud of this group. They are selfless in their actions, putting Wynberg first on every occasion. Saturday’s game is one last opportunity for them to express themselves and who they are as a group. I’m excited for them.”

SACS has proved to be a gritty, tough team this season, but Wynberg will, nonetheless, go into the last game of the season as the favourite.
