Right-wing Zachary de Kock dotted down three times in Wynberg Boys’ High‘s 26-15 victory over their southern suburbs’ rivals, SACS, at Hawthornden Field on Saturday.
The home side played the game with speed, getting the ball wide and relying on their backs to break the line.
Inside centre, Luke Gertze demonstrated impressive acceleration and top-end gas to race through the middle for a try, while the man on his inside, flyhalf Achmat Behardien, collected six points from three successful conversions.
SACS flyhalf Jake Dave tallied five points from a penalty and a conversion, while outside centre Luca Orgill had a good outing and went over for a try.
Openside flank Kawakanya Gobe put in a heavy shift among the SACS forwards. He scored a try and, as importantly, helped to neutralise the ‘Berg rolling maul with help from lock Cameron Hirst.
Wynberg eighthman Esa van der Schyff looked good upon his return from some rest. He was instrumental in preventing SACS from getting over the gain line with multiple dominant tackles.
Openside flank Alvin Machinja was often first to the breakdown, allowing the hosts to thread together long phases of attacking play.
Wynberg will be happy to end the term with an eighth win. They return to action on 25 July against Boland Landbou. SACS faces a stiff test on the same day, taking on Paul Roos Gimnasium.
