The second edition of Glenwood’s Clive Barker Soccer Tournament returns on Wednesday, 15 July.
The event debuted as an u16 tournament in 2025. This year, it has expanded and also includes an u14 age group competition
Pinetown Boys’ High lifted the first Clive Barker Soccer Tournament in 2025, defeating Maritzburg College 2-0 in the final. They won’t be back to defend the title, however. A couple of weeks ago, they also didn’t defend the Kloof High School National Football Tournament title.
Barker, a Glenwood Old Boy and a celebrated South African football icon, dedicated over four decades of his life to the sport. He led Bafana Bafana to victory in the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) in 1996, with South Africa defeating Tunisia 2-0 in front of an enthusiastic, capacity crowd at the FNB Stadium. That remains the only Afcon title won by Bafana Bafana.

In a recent press release, Glenwood said Barker was not merely a man of trophies and accolades, but also a man whose most significant attribute was his ability to connect with others.
“Widely regarded as a master motivator and exceptional manager, he believed in the power of teamwork, discipline, respect, and self-belief. Many of South Africa’s football stars credit him with shaping both their careers and their character,” the press release stated.
Through the festival, Glenwood proudly honours Barker, a man whose achievements with Bafana Bafana united the South African nation behind the sport of football. He inspired a generation and showed young footballers that with dedication, belief, and passion, they could achieve lofty goals.
The Clive Barker Foundation, which was established to commemorate Barker’s legacy, values, and lasting contributions to South African football, will also be present at the tournament. Motivated by his belief in people and his commitment to player development, the foundation aims to create meaningful opportunities for young footballers, coaches, and communities throughout South Africa.
Mark Fish, the former Orlando Pirates, Charlton Athletic, and Bafana Bafana defender, will serve as a special guest at the Clive Barker Soccer Tournament.
Fish is celebrated as one of South Africa’s most distinguished footballers and enjoyed an impressive professional career that lasted over 15 years. Born on March 14, 1974, in Cape Town, he gained recognition as a formidable defender with Jomo Cosmos before transferring to the Buccaneers.
During his time with the Sea Robbers, he played a crucial role in one of the club’s most successful periods, contributing to their league title victory in 1994, as well as their victory in the 1995 Caf Champions League and the 1996 Caf Super Cup.
Fish then moved to Europe, playing for Lazio in Italy, and achieving success in the English Premier League with Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic.
On the international front, Fish was celebrated for his leadership and defensive prowess and was a key contributor in the iconic Bafana Bafana team that won the 1996 Afcon title under Clive Barker.
Fish earned 62 caps for South Africa and represented the nation at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, which was the first time that Bafana Bafana had qualified for the tournament. He was named in the Afcon Team of the Tournament in both 1996 and 1998. After winning the event in 1996, South Africa finished as the runner-up to Egypt in 1998, going down 0-2 in the final.
Fish is dedicated to advancing South African football by sharing his expertise through mentoring, coaching, and a youth development programme through his Mark Fish Foundation.
At the end of the tournaments, an u14 and u16 Clive Barker XI will be named.
Glenwood stated that the Clive Barker XI would focus on talent identification and development. Throughout the tournament, an independent selection committee will identify the most exceptional players from the participating schools and construct two representative squads.
The squads will create an opportunity for the players to gain recognition for their performances, attitude, sportsmanship, and potential. The selection panel includes former Bafana Bafana players, professional football figures, esteemed coaches, and player representatives.
Those players chosen for the u14 and u16 sides will engage in professional coaching sessions, mentorship opportunities, and football development initiatives, and they’ll face the AmaZulu u14 and u16 teams.
The Director of Soccer at Glenwood, Khaya Mngwengwe, told SuperSport Schools News last year that the school’s long-term vision is for the Clive Barker Soccer Tournament to evolve into an annual event that honours young footballers by offering them exposure to higher levels of competition and professional guidance within South African football. Clearly, that vision will be realised this year.
