Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) defends both the U17 and U15 titles at the Montana Sevens on Friday and Saturday.
As one of the largest Clover High School Sevens Series events, it features competition in four sections, with the Monties Hive Sevens also featuring U15 and U17 teams in a B Section event.
If there’s a team that is going to challenge Affies for the title, it could be Hoërskool Garsfontein. Not only did they beat Affies during the rugby season, but their U17 side shone in the Marius Schoeman Sevens in Paarl last weekend, finishing second, even though the winners, Paul Roos Gimnasium, didn’t defeat Garsies in the final.
The teams were level at 19-19 after extra time, but, according to the tournament rules, Paul Roos won because they scored the first points of the final.
The big question that Garsfontein will have to answer is how much the Western Cape tournament took out of them. Like the Montana Sevens, the Marius Schoeman Sevens is a big event featuring high-quality teams, and Garsies might find that their efforts there catch up to them in Pretoria.
Die Hoërskool Menlopark lost by only three points to the winners of the Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg Sevens, Hoërskool Noordheuwel, last weekend, but dominated the rest of their matches. They could be a dark horse.
In 2024, they beat Garsfontein in the semifinals and Affies in the final to lift the trophy.
It’s worth noting that the U15 winner in 2024 was Affies. Two years on, those players are now U17, which suggests that they remain the team to beat.
Still, given the nature of the game, there are bound to be some upsets in both age groups, and that’s one of the things that makes Sevens exciting.
