Zizi Mkhize delivered a sensational all-round performance to lead Jeppe High to a 54-run win over King Edward VII (KES) in their 50-over match on the John Hurry Oval at KES on Saturday.
Matthew Bromley, the KES captain, won the toss and inserted Jeppe to bat first. The visitors responded well to the challenge, posting 270 all out in 50 overs.
Jeppe’s bowling attack then pulled together as a unit to bowl out KES for 216 in 38 overs.
Mkhize gave his captain, Ryan Young, who was playing in his 150th match for the Jeppe 1st XI, a reason to celebrate with an impressive century.
Young made his first-team debut in 2023 and would have loved to celebrate the milestone with a big score, but he, unfortunately, fell for a three-ball duck.
Luckily for him, Mkhize was there to save the day. The left-hander crunched 11 fours and a six on his way to 113 from 121 balls. Mkhize, batting at number four, made his way to the crease in the sixth over after KES’s premier pacer, Tyler Cloete, got stuck into the Jeppe top-order.
Mkhize shared two significant partnerships. The first was a 55-run fifth-wicket stand with Phemelo Sekhopane (26). Then he added 90 for the seventh wicket with Asher Aitken (28). Keegan Cockburn ensured Jeppe reached a winning total with a handy 34 runs from 36 balls.
Mkhize’s outstanding knock came to an end in the 42nd over when he fell to Cloete. The KES paceman removed four of Jeppe’s top five batsmen, on his way to a haul of 5/48 from his 10 overs. Ryan Erasmus played his part, chipping in with 3/47 in nine.
When KES replied, Troy Gordon led their charge, scoring a spirited 70 from 74 balls. He was part of an industrious 58-run third-wicket partnership with Urav Mukhija (36) and also shared a 72-run fourth-wicket stand with Abdullah Mohammed. Unfortunately, KES needed even more from him to draw closer to the total set by Jeppe.
The visitors rallied as a unit during KES’s innings and were impressively sharp in the field. They executed two match-turning run outs to deny KES traction. The first one got rid of Matthew Bromley, and the second sent Abdullah Mohammed back to the pavilion.
Mkhize, after his batting heroics, chipped in with the ball, snapping up three wickets in four balls to stymie the efforts of KES’s lower order. He was Jeppe’s most successful bowler, finishing with 3/35 in nine overs.
Ethan Ferguson dislodged two batsmen for 21 runs in seven overs, while Keegan Cockburn, Shreshth Kumar, and Reza Ayob claimed a wicket each.
