On the eve of Super August there is bound to be some shake-ups on School of Rugby‘s Rankings during the final month of the schoolboy rugby season of 2019. There was not a lot of movement in the Top 20, but quite a few movements down the rankings.
This weekend school rugby followers could look forward to the annual Premier Interschools between Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys’ High in the Faure Street Stadium in Paarl. This is the biggest interschools in the world and would probably also decide the second position on our final rankings.
Gimmies is in second place with one solitary defeat against top ranked, Grey College (33-47), during the Wildeklawer Festival the only blemish on their record. Boishaai also suffered their only defeat against the side from Bloemfontein (24-43), with their draw of 20-all against Helpmekaar during the Noord/Suid Festival being the only difference between the two sides.
The biggest upset on Saturday was Pretoria Boys’ High‘s victory over Affies. The 38-21 victory was the first for the Candies over their neighbours since 2008. Goudveld of Welkom also caused an upset in the semi-finals of the Griffon-league by beating the newly crowned Wesgrow Series champions, Voortrekker of Bethlehem, by 38-17.
Frikkie Meyer of Thabazimbi lost 34-38 to Ligbron from Ermelo in the play-offs of the Virsekerbeker. This was only Frikkie Meyer’s second defeat of the season. Their only other defeat came a week earlier against Pietersburg (25)34) in the Limpopo final.
Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results.
These rankings are not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibility on reporting school rugby very seriously.
