Hooker Kwaza Gobingca sealed the deal for Rondebosch Boys’ High with his second try, in the last phase of play, resulting in a nail-biting 29-24 triumph over Bishops on the Piley Rees on Saturday.
Bishops, somewhat unexpectedly, led 24-12 at the break in the southern suburbs’ derby.
Jack Fleck, demonstrating the predatory instincts of a no. 9, sniped through for a try for the home side, while hooker Joe Lanning and loosehead prop Jack Hibling ploughed their paths over the try line.
Outside centre Eljaron Geduld was superb off the kicking tee, converting all three tries and adding a penalty.
Bishops’ maul defence was much improved, and they matched the visitors in the set-pieces.
‘Bosch flyhalf Eathon Williams and fullback Shellvon Mabooi hit the line hard and with speed to score tries, and they were also responsible for converting their own tries, turning both into seven-point plays.
Caleb Bell contributed a much-needed try on the left wing, as Rondebosch outperformed the hosts with clinical finishing in the second half.
After a narrow victory, fitting of the long-standing and close rivalry between the schools, Rondebosch will have over a month to prepare for their next match on 25 July, a daunting fixture against the high-flying Paarl Gimnasium.
Although they lost, Bishops will take many positives out of the clash. They next play on 1 August when they tackle Wynberg Boys’ High in another southern suburbs’ derby.
