Phenomenal Paarl Gim overwhelms Paul Roos in King Price Derby Series match-up

Corné Niemand was deemed the cream of the crop with the King of the Match award after Paarl Gimnasium delivered a performance for the ages in their 68-22 dismantling of Paul Roos Gimnasium in a King Price Derby Series fixture at the J.A. Kriel Field on Saturday.

The openside flank scored two tries; a feat he shared with partner Dirk Hugo on the blindside.

They and hooker Charles Whitehead found success from the rolling maul on multiple occasions as the Gimmies‘ forward pack functioned as cohesively as synchronised swimmers.

It was champagne rugby.

Interestingly enough, the contest looked pretty tight with the scoreline at 21-17 in favour of the hosts at halftime.

Ou Polla’s Boys certainly produced some strong moments in the first half. Eighthman Werner de Bruin and hooker Lehan Bernard used their large frames to power over the try line, making the Gimmies’ defence look vulnerable against powerful ball carriers.

The Paarl locals turned things up a notch in the second half, outscoring Paul Roos 47 points to five.

Among the backs, scrumhalf Mickyle Booise distributed with speed and put in a brilliant kick downfield for the electric left-wing Dewaal Vivier to chase and dot down for his second try, which brought the match to a spectacular end.

Flyhalf Louis Koen demonstrated his arsenal of kicks and passes in a performance which fit the bill of  “creative genius”. His chip over the top for captain and inside centre Ethan Barker was inch-perfect, with the captain diving over the try line for five. If the ball had landed on any other mark, then the Maroon Machine might have been able to hold up the captain and prevent his try-scoring effort.

The Paarl Gim winning streak now stands at 12 games. In this form, it is hard to imagine any side ending it.

They’ve now topped 60 points in four of their past five games. In the other, they scored 49 in a 36-point win over Oakdale Landbou.

Paul Roos Gimnasium 22 (17) – Tries: Werner de Bruin, Lehan Bernard, Tristan Armitage. Conversion: Travis Pheiffer (2). Penalty: Pheiffer.
