Paul Roos Gimnasium substitute and utility back Brandon Hammon scored the winning try right at the end of the game as the visitors edged out SACS 38-34 on Memorial A-Field in Cape Town on Saturday.
Flyhalf Jake Dave was phenomenal for the Newlands outfit, who played their hearts out against their highly rated opposition. He scored 24 points from a try, two conversions, and five penalties.
Even though he was on the losing side, Dave was a sound choice for the man of the match.
Inside centre Tom Cruickshank scored a try on debut for the Maroon Machine. He stepped up onto the big stage and looked comfortable in the spotlight.
Left-wing Cadynn Samuels has been a prolific try-scorer all season long for Ou Polla’s Boys, and he was again in the thick of the action, crossing for a brace out wide.
A stern examination from SACS will have the Stellenbosch outfit ready for the visit of Boland Landbou next Saturday.
SACS, meanwhile, has a trifecta of southern suburbs’ derbies ahead of them. Next weekend, they’re at home against Rondebosch Boys’ High.
In Bellville, DF Akademie earned a fourth win of the season. They held on for a 31-27 victory over Hoërskool Punt after a narrow 32-29 defeat of Punt in Mossel Bay earlier in the year.
Both sides scored four tries and a penalty each. However, fullback Pieter Delport’s four perfect conversions separated the schools. In a tight contest, his goalkicking made the difference.
Punt’s pack performed well, and eighthman Luan Janse van Rensburg, lock Aidan Bancroft, and tighthead prop Avenathi Sambokwe all powered over the try line.
DF Akademie will aim for another home win next Saturday when they host Hoërskool Brackenfell.
Thanks to a phenomenal hat-trick by blindside flank Nico Lourens, Milnerton High overcame Hoërskool Tygerberg 19-15 at home. Captain Chadlin Sellidon converted two tries for the four points that made the difference between winning and losing.
It was Millies’ second win of the season and a perfect way to start the third term. However, they face a monumental hurdle next weekend when they take on HTS Drostdy, who handed Oakdale a loss on Saturday.
