The pair of Corné De Beer on the right wing and Corné Niemand on the openside flank scored a brace each in Paarl Gimnasium’s 13th straight win, a 52-24 victory over Rondebosch Boys’ High on the JA Kriel Field on Saturday.
De Beer also added six conversions for an individual tally of 17 points.
In an interesting twist, captain Ethan Barker played at flyhalf, rather than at inside centre, his usual position. Might that be an indication that Gimmies are preparing some wrinkles in their approach to their massive King Price Derby Series showdown against Paarl Boys’ High next Saturday?
Loose forward Liam Lewis bagged two tries for ‘Bosch, who also played exciting, attacking rugby and racked up four tries of their own. It was very much a game of offence versus offence, although that’s not to say there weren’t some big tackles delivered.
Ultimately, Gim enjoyed the edge in the set pieces, and they were more clinical when in possession.
Rondebosch plays the first of three southern suburbs’ derbies this coming weekend. They visit the Memorial A-Field for a showdown with SACS.
Paarl Boys’ High visited Hoërskool Durbanville on Saturday and topped 50 points for the first time this season, scoring a convincing 57-6 victory.
Boishaai dominated every aspect of the game, playing with speed and a physicality that Durbies struggled to match.
Blindside flank Luhan Hattingh crossed for two tries. His work rate was excellent, and the forthcoming Paarl derby will create an interesting battle between Hattingh and Corné De Beer for control of the loose ball.
Flyhalf Daniel Meisenheimer looked fresh and was at his best. He slotted his eight conversion attempts and also distributed the ball with speed and precision.
Captain and lock AD Faul was another key member of the Paarl outfit to get over the try line for five points of his own.
