Middle-order batsman Christiaan Fouché was a key performer for Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) on Saturday, sharing two important partnerships, as PRG powered to a 189-run win over the visiting Hoërskool Outeniqua in a limited-overs match.
The Stellenbosch locals made the right choice to bat first. Number three batsman Janko Webb was the first to get his claws into the Outeniqua attack, hitting three fours and a six in his 47.
Fouché joined him in the middle for a 74-run fourth-wicket stand, hitting an explosive six sixes and a single four in his 74 off 58 balls.
Aiden Titus, at six, found the boundary four times in his 33 off 37, and combined with Fouché to add 80 runs for the fifth wicket.
Captain Hanno Swart led the George school’s attack, capturing 4/42, including the last wicket, which left Paul Roos all out for 249 in the 44th over. Jonathan Tulleken was the only other bowler to complete his allocated 10 overs and recorded figures of 3/48.
Outeniqua’s reply faltered early as Ou Polla’s bowling unit went hard at the visitors. In six overs each, both opening bowlers, Dion Slabber and Morné Pauw, snapped up three wickets. Slabber took 3/18, while Pauw was even more miserly, returning 3/13, including a wicket-maiden.
Batting at seven, Dehan Meyer, fought a lonesome battle and was the only Outeniqua batsman to reach double figures. He finished with 16 off 34 deliveries, including a four and a six, but Outeniqua crashed to just 60 all out.
In a 50-over southern suburbs derby, SACS opted to bat first after winning the toss at Rondebosch Boys’ High, and their openers turned that into a good decision, compiling 87 for the first wicket.
SACS’ skipper Aqeel Waggie stroked four fours in a watchful 45 off 76 balls, while his fellow opener, Abhay Kalan, hit six fours and a six in the innings’ top score of 89 not out, which he achieved from 138 deliveries.
Batsmen three and four, Jordan Berry and Luke Horan, contributed 25 and 24, respectively, as SACS tallied 208/5.
Raa’id Davids was the only Bosch bowler to take multiple wickets, snaffling 2/36 from seven overs.
Top-order batsman Tyler Heyns then stuck around for most of the home side’s run chase, entertaining with six fours in his 63 off 82 balls, while opening batsman Ramano Pedro hit the same number of fours in his 35 off 32.
Captain Schalk Fourie, batting at five, launched two sixes in his 25-run contribution as Bosch overtook SACS in the 43rd over, reaching 210/7 to win by three wickets.
Abhay Kalan completed an outstanding all-round showing, following up his fine knock with 4/52 from 10 overs, but SACS needed more wickets from their other bowlers.
