St Patrick’s CBC continued their winning ways in the Northern Cape rain Schools SA20 on Saturday, cruising to a comfortable 54-run win over Hoërskool Kalahari in Kimberley.
Playing at Hoërskool Diamantveld, CBC batted first after winning the toss. Opening batsman Faizaan Kajee was up for the challenge, which was a good thing, because without him, their innings would have looked far different.
He scored 99 of their runs and finished unbeaten. In a whirlwind knock, he smashed 13 fours and two sixes and shared in the innings’ biggest partnership of 69 runs for the third wicket with Kieran Adams off 8.1 overs.
Adams was CBC’s second-highest score, with a run-a-ball 27, while Kajee’s opening partner, Daniel Feder, was the only other batsman to reach double figures, with 13.
TJ Lategan did a good job with the ball, claiming 2/19 from four overs, and Wilrigh Mostert was tidy, too, picking up 1/19 from his four.
Unfortunately for Kalahari, they were already two wickets down at the start of the third over. They lost wickets regularly, preventing them from growing partnerships. That was shown by the fact that Strauss van Heerden and Luan Joubert shared the biggest stand of 27 for the ninth wicket. The top order had failed to fire.
Van Heerden fought a lone battle vigorously, hammering seven sixes and three fours in a 28-ball stay that produced 67 runs. Only TJ Lategan joined him in double figures, chipping in 16 runs, but the next best for Kalahari was only five as they fell to 108 all out from 15 overs.
Daniel Feder led the St Patrick’s CBC attack, capturing 3/10 from four overs. Sulaimaan Hunter lent good support, picking up 2/25, but the best support of all came from the CBC fielders, who ran out three batsmen.
Hoërskool Kalahari vs Hoërskool De Aar
Hoërskool Kalahari also faced Hoërskool De Aar. They met at the Kimberley Country Club, and Kalahari made quick work of their opposition to finish the day with one win and one loss.
Kalahari’s decision to field first paid dividends, although, at first, it appeared to have backfired as Senzo Fillies and Saeed Mukhadir put on 34 for the first wicket. When Mukhadir fell for four in the sixth over, that triggered an astonishing collapse, with De Aar losing all 10 wickets for just 17 runs.
Fillies was the second man out, four runs after his opening partner, for the innings’ highest score of 21. In the next 9.2 overs, De Aar added only 13 runs and were all out for 51.
Three bowlers snapped up three wickets each. Ruben Mare sent down only two overs but knocked over 3/3, Wilrigh Mostert returned 3/12 from four, and Zian Shepherd 3/15 from his four.
Faced with a low total, Kalahari didn’t hold back in their run pursuit, charging to 54/2 in only four overs to score an emphatic eight-wicket win.
Franco Hoops clubbed four fours in a quickfire 19 from nine, and Kopano Mosienyane added another two fours in his nine not out from four balls, while TJ Lategan struck the winning runs and was 10 not out.
Angelo Struis was the only bowler to pick up a wicket – Warko Smit was run out for four – but went for 24 runs from his two overs.
Hoërskool Upington vs Hoërskool De Aar
Hoërskool Upington also beat De Aar, but it was a far closer game, with Uppies claiming an 11-run win.
Playing at CBC’s Backfield, Upington tallied 155/7 from their 20 overs, led by 44 from opening batsman, CJ Botha, who didn’t hang around. In just 23 balls, he struck eight fours and a six.
Four others chipped in with scores in the teens, but the next biggest contributor was extras, which added 33 runs to Upington’s total.
Senzo Fillies was a big reason why Uppies’ batsmen failed to press on, sending four packing for only 18 runs from four overs.
De Aar posted 144/8 in reply, and Fillies was again a big contributor. He faced the first ball and went on to score 34 from 26, with three fours and three sixes. After he was bowled by Vaylen Lombaard, De Aar was 49/1 at the start of the sixth over, off to a good start.
Lombaard also bowled Hennie Venter for 13, but apart from Angelo Struis, no other batsmen made meaningful contributions. Struis stood tall, however, finishing with an undefeated 62 from 45 deliveries, including five fours and three sixes, but Jandre Botha kept De Aar from putting pedal to the metal.
He destroyed De Aar’s middle order, grabbing 3/18 from his four overs. Lombaard, too, tied down the batsmen, returning a suffocating 2/10 from four. Those eight overs were pivotal in Uppies’ 11-run victory.
Hoërskool Upington vs Hoërskool De Kalahari 2nd XI
Upington claimed a second win, but it was even tighter, by only five runs over the Hoërskool Kalahari 2nd XI at Hoërskool Diamantveld.
Uppies’ decision to bat first paid off. Vaylen Lombaard demonstrated his all-round ability by scoring an unbeaten 69. During his 54-ball stay, he allowed 21 dot balls, but he also hit five fours and four sixes.
Jeandre Witbooi‘s 36 from 24 included four sixes, and Stephan Fourie struck a pair of fours and a pair of sixes in his 26 off 18. An assist of 25 from extras lifted Upington to 178/5. That proved to be just enough.
Opening batsman, Kehan de Jonge, anchored the Kalahari 2nd XI’s reply, top-scoring with 72 from 57 balls, cracking five sixes and four fours.
Juan van der Linden hammered 37 off only 19 deliveries, with four sixes and two fours, but lost his wicket in the last over as Upington came up narrowly short, ending on 173/6.
Roux Erasmus did an outstanding job after Van der Linden’s dismissal to secure the win, with Kalahari scoring only one leg bye off the remaining four balls. He finished with 2/20 from four overs, while CJ Botha picked up 2/26 from four.
