Rondebosch Boys’ High captain and all-rounder Schalk Fourie has been in top-notch form for his side. He recently scored a couple of handy half-centuries and bagged plenty of wickets on a 10-game tour of India.

He’ll aim to continue that form at the NoordSuid Wildeklawer T20 Cricket Tournament, which takes place in Pretoria between Thursday, 8 October, and Sunday, 11 October.

The festival is being hosted by Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies), Die Hoërskool Menlopark, and Hoërskool Waterkloof.

In an interview with SuperSport Schools News, Fourie explained how he got into cricket and what ignited his passion for the sport.

“My earliest memory of cricket goes back to playing in the backyard with my dad. He would throw balls to me, and I would hit them over the walls and into the neighbour’s property,” he recalled. “Even when it started getting dark, and we knew we had to stop, my favorite saying was, ‘Just one last six’.

“What really ignites my passion for this beautiful game is the challenge it brings with every single delivery. Whether you are batting or bowling, you must be completely focused and at the top of your game. Every ball is a new battle, a new opportunity, and a chance to make something happen.

“That is what I love about cricket. No matter what happened on the previous ball, the next delivery gives you another chance to compete, improve, and make a difference.”

While he has developed into a strong all-rounder, Fourie continues to work on different aspects of his game.

“I think the biggest area of my game that I need to work on is consistency,” he said candidly. “I know that when I am confident and focused, I can perform at a high level, but I want to reach a point where I can produce those performances more regularly. For me, that means staying composed by trusting my skills, especially when under pressure or playing against stronger opposition.

“I also know that consistency doesn’t just come from match day. It comes from the work I put in at training, the way I prepare, and how willing I am to work on the small parts of my game that can make a big difference.

“I want to become the type of player my teammates and coaches can rely on, regardless of the situation. Every game gives me something to learn from, and I want to use both my good performances and my difficult ones to keep improving.”

The Master in Charge (MIC) of Cricket at Rondebosch, Ollie Slingers, noted that the Rondebosch captain’s confidence has been growing: “I’d say his confidence and belief in his own ability are the aspects of his game which have grown the most. He doesn’t shy away from the tough overs (or conversations) and continually encourages those around him, and holds them to a high standard. He sets the tone for the team, which makes our job as coaches much easier.”

It takes mental strength to be honest with oneself, but it is a key to self-improvement that Fourie discovered early in life. As the famous psychologist Carl Jung once said: “Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.”

Looking forward, Fourie shared some of his ambitions for the future: “Over the next five years, my biggest goal is to keep developing as a cricketer and to challenge myself to play at the highest level I can.

“I would love the opportunity to play as a professional one day. I know there is a lot of hard work and competition along the way, but that is what motivates me. I want to see how far I can take my cricket and make the most of the talent and opportunities I have been given.

“Outside of cricket, I want to finish school strongly and build a career that I am passionate about.

“My family has always supported me, and making them proud means a lot to me.

“Most importantly, I want to keep growing as a person, stay humble and grounded, and use the lessons cricket has taught me about discipline, resilience, teamwork, and dealing with setbacks to make a positive difference in the lives of others.”

With his steadfast attitude and with Rondebosch coming off a successful tour in India, where they won nine out of 10 matches, Schalk Fourie and his team should be among the title contenders at the NoordSuid Wildeklawer T20 Festival.
