All school rugby tournaments and festivals planned for the upcoming school holidays will be canceled or postponed. The Republic of South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, announced on Sunday that no gatherings of 100 people or more will be allowed to counter the Coronavirus epidemic.
All South African schools will also be closed from Wednesday, 18 March 2020 until after the Easter Weekend. This means that no school sport will be allowed during this time frame. This coming weekend’s Noord/Suid-tournament at Waterkloof in Pretoria, the various Easter Festivals, Waterkloof’s Netball Festival, and various other festivals will either be canceled or postponed.
The three top junior schoolboy rugby tournaments – Outeniqua (u14), Paarl Boys’ High (u15) and Paarl Gimnasium (u16) will also be impacted by this move.
There will without a doubt be a huge financial implication on schools and their parents as payments for travel and accommodation for the various tournaments have been made. Sponsors and organisers will also take a financial knock as tournaments and festivals can’t take place.
The World Schools Festival was the first tournament that was impacted by COVID-19 as the organisers, Carinat Sports Marketing, had to cancel the festival in celebration of Affies’ century with less than a month to go because of the outbreak.
