Reddam House Constantia, Durban Girls’ College (DGC), Clarendon High School for Girls, and St Cyprian’s School produced impressive performances on Friday, day one of the Mackenzie Cup, to book their places in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
The four sides, who ended the day in the top two places Pool A and B, respectively, dominated play at Reddam’s Aquatic Centre in Cape Town.

The hosts were on fire on, recording wins over St Cyprian’s, Collegiate, and Rhenish.
Coach Connor Whiting‘s side appeared to be scoring goals for fun as they opened their campaign with a 10-1 victory over Collegiate. Soon after, they thumped Rhenish 17-3 before beating their Cape Town rivals St Cyprian’s 10-6 in a closely contested encounter.
Apart from their loss to Reddam House, St Cyprian’s cruised past Rhenish but were stretched by Collegiate, whom they edged out 10-9.
Pool B was deemed to be the group of death, and the results from the early games proved why.
The defending champion, Durban Girls’ College, was dealt a massive blow, going down to Clarendon 2-3 on penalties after the match ended in a jaw-dropping 8-8 draw.
DGC bounced back nicely after that defeat and scraped past Herschel in another penalty shootout before downing Glenwood House 10-8 in their final match of the day.
Clarendon fell to Glenwood House, but an impressive 9-6 win over Herschel ensured a second place finish in the group and progress to the last eight.
Pearson High School dominated Pool C, winning against Wynberg Girls’ High, Springfield Convent School and Fish Hoek.
Meanwhile, in Pool D, the Reddam Invitational side ran riot, beating Rustenburg Girls’ High, Somerset College and Westerford.
The teams in Pools C and D meet in playoff matches on Saturday to determine which sides will progress to the quarterfinals.
The action at the indoor aquatic centre kicks off at 09:00 when Collegiate faces Springfield before Herschel takes on Rustenburg Girls’ High.
