The Mackenzie Cup has proved to be a captivating event in recent years, and this year’s competition should be no different.
Durban Girls’ College (DGC) from KwaZulu-Natal enters the tournament as the defending champion after edging out the hosts 8-6 in last year’s final.
Coached by Peter Lavett, DGC has been drawn in Pool B, where they will face the 2024 runner-up, Herschel Girls, along with Glenwood House and the unpredictable Clarendon Girls High of KuGompo City.
Reddam House is in Pool A and will be aiming to raise the trophy for the second time in three years. In 2024, they defeated Herschel 6-4 in an entertaining final.
Coach Connor Whiting‘s side will have to deal with their fellow Western Cape sides, Rhenish and St Cyprian‘s, and Collegiate Girls’ High from Gqeberha.
Pool C is wide open and unpredictable.
Last year didn’t go according to plan for Wynberg Girls’ High. They finished outside the top 10 and will be determined to make their mark this time around. They’ll be up against Pearson High, Fish Hoek High, and Springfield Convent School.
Meanwhile, Westerford is in Pool D and will compete against Rustenburg Girls’ High, the Reddam House Invitational side, and Somerset College.
The Reddam House Invitational side enjoyed a strong showing last year, finishing in sixth place, just behind Clarendon and DSG Makhanda, who placed fifth and fourth, respectively.
The weekend’s action kicks off bright and early on Friday when the hosts take on Collegiate at 09:00.
Durban Girls’ College’s title defence begins against Clarendon at 09:40, while Herschel, last year’s bronze medallists, meets Glenwood House at the same time in the Indoor Pool.
After Friday’s group stage matches, the tournament heads into the playoffs, with the event ending on Sunday, when the semifinals take place, followed by the final at 14:40.
