Reddam House Constantia and St Paul’s College will battle for top honours when they meet in the final of the Cape Town International Hockey Tournament (CTIHT) on Sunday afternoon.
The title game takes place at Hartleyvale A at 14:30.
“Our girls are pretty excited to be playing in the final,” Chris Hibbert, the Reddam House coach, told SuperSport Schools News. “It’s not often that you get the privilege to play in the final.
“St Paul’s will have a score to settle from last year’s final, and we will be looking to get another win over them.”
Reddam House and St Paul’s have been on a collision course since the start of the annual showpiece, dominating their respective pools, and they remain the only unbeaten sides in the tournament.
In their Pool A campaign, St Paul’s scored 12 goals and conceded once, winning each of their four games. That set them up for a cross-pool fixture against York High, who finished third in Pool B. Goals from Leila Grögli in the 19th and 30th minutes helped the Namibians to a 2-1 win, with Kitra Soldin scoring for York.
They had a tougher time against the Rhenish Girls Invitational team in their next outing, with the clash ending goalless. Those two results, however, were enough to secure them a spot in the final, where they will meet the side that broke their hearts 12 months ago.
Reddam House Constantia beat St Paul’s 3-1 in last year’s title decider, with goals from Emma Hibbert, Jess Bester, and Sally Gitlin. All three have made important contributions to their side’s journey to this year’s final.
Like St Paul’s, Reddam House ruled the roost in their group matches, collecting all 12 available points in their Pool B campaign, scoring 15 and conceding only four goals.
“The good thing about our goals has been that they have come from different players,” Hibbert said.
In their first cross-pool match, though, they were unable to break through Somerset College‘s stubborn defence, and the game ended 0-0.
That left Reddam needing either a win or a draw against Paarl Girls’ High, and they delivered a 3-0 victory, which was more hard-fought than the result might suggest.
Paarl Girls’ High held their own, and the match was scoreless until the last six minutes when Bester broke the deadlock through a penalty corner conversion. She soon struck again to double Reddam House’s lead, before Josephine Latham wrapped up matters with a goal in the final minute of play.
In the girls’ Evolve final, HS Punt will meet Union High at Hartleyvale A at 12:30 on Sunday.
Saturday is a rest day.
