Northwood capitalised on their opportunities and spoiled the party for Glenwood High, who were celebrating their Old Boys’ Day, by clinching a 5-0 win over their hosts at the Three Schools Astro in Durban on Friday night.
“While the scoreline suggests a comfortable result, Glenwood made us work hard throughout the contest, and we thank them for their hospitality and the competitive fixture,” Justin Collins, the Northwood coach, told SuperSport Schools News.
“Well done to all the players on a disciplined and clinical performance.”
Glenwood seized the early initiative and put the Knights under pressure for long periods. Northwood held firm, though, in an entertaining first half.
During the halftime break, Collins and his coaching staff made tactical adjustments. They reaped a reward barely a minute into the third chukka when the Knights’ press won them possession close to the halfway line, and they attacked down the right flank.
Luc Boyall, who is enjoying a fruitful season, positioned himself well in the circle, received the final pass, and did not miss from close range for the contest’s opener. That goal gave the visitors momentum, and they grew in confidence as the game progressed.
Over the next 12 minutes, Northwood enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, playing the game in Glenwood’s half. Their persistence was rewarded in the final minute of the quarter, with Ryan Willis making it 2-0 to the Knights.
They executed a smooth penalty corner routine shortly after the start of the fourth chukka, increasing their lead to three goals, thanks to James Searle. Then, Keegan Reeves made it 4-0 less than three minutes later. Like Searle, he struck from a short corner.
Glenwood did not allow the imposing scoreline to dampen their spirits. They made runs into Northwood’s half, prodding and searching for an opening that could lead to a goal. The Knights’ defence was on top form, however, and they shut down all of Glenwood’s attacking attempts.
Caleb Phipson completed the visitors’ scoring in the final chukka to give Northwood a comprehensive 5-0 victory.
“A sincere thank you to Glenwood for hosting us on their Old Boys’ Day. It was a fiercely contested match, with Glenwood applying sustained pressure throughout large periods of the game,” Collins said, acknowledging that it takes two to tango.
