Lucy Holderness of DSG Makhanda etched her name in the school’s history books with a star turn in her side’s emphatic 10-0 win over Clarendon High School for Girls in KuGompo City on the weekend.
Holderness, whose exploits are well-known to fans of the South African schoolgirls’ game, scored a hat-trick for her side and, in the process, reached an outstanding 100 goals at first-team level.
Her sister, Abigail Holderness, the Eastern Province u18 captain in 2025, also represented DSG over 100 times. She achieved a similar goal-scoring feat before matriculating from the Makhanda school last year.
DSG’s dominant performance against Clarendon was timely as coach Geowynne Gamiet‘s side ramps up preparations for the highly anticipated K-Day Derby against Kingswood College on 12 June.
It was also their second straight win following a 6-3 defeat of Eunice High a week ago, which came after they had suffered a 1-5 loss to their rivals, Collegiate Girls High, in May.
Besides Holderness’s hat-trick, Emma Watson and Ava van der Walt both found the back of the net twice, while strikes by Alex Ovendal, Jasmine Apps, and Chloe White completed the scoring.
DSG will aim to continue their impressive run against Kingswood, who defeated Westering High 3-0 in their last outing.

Elsewhere in KuGompo City, Hudson Park High School overran Kingsridge High School (KHS) of Qonce 12-0.
It was one-way traffic for coach Jerry Snyman‘s side, who punished their opponents from the first chukka.
SA u17 player, Busiwe Mayekiso, had her scoring boots on and netted a whopping six goals, while her teammate Kara Batting, who has also represented Border in water polo and hockey, scored a hat-trick.
The other goals were scored by Stephanie Malinzi, Kendra Sansom, and Georga Marais.
Pearson High bagged a big win, too, beating Woodridge College 5-1 in Gqeberha.
Kiyara Constable‘s brace laid the foundation for victory, with Lisa de Villiers, Milan Janse van Rensburg, and Lumé Barnard also scoring.
“It was a great way to finish off the term with a good set of results. It’s been exciting to see the growth throughout the season,” Anton Peltenburg, Pearson’s head coach, said after the match.

Hudson Park 12-0 KHS
